Sorry.

Bit of a quandry here:

I'm very happy with the hardtail MTB, so that's safe.
And the BMX.

Have a couple of other bikes:
a) 1996 Trek 1400 roadie: hideously stiff, uncomfortable and overgeared, but good fun.
b) My lovely old steel Rockhopper which has Kona P2's/rack/a nice Brooks on it and gets used as a rigid MTB, tourer and commuter.

Might now have the option of Bike 2 Work, so:

Get a lightweight carbon roadie and demote the Trek to winter use/sell it.

or

Get a CX/Disc type bike and flog both the Trek and the Rockhopper to raise a bit of cash (not much though).

Heart says get the carbon roadie. They're all modern and flash and I get to keep the Rockhopper, which still does everything a crosser can.

Head says don't be daft, you're an ageing fat knacker who'll be better off with a sensible disc crosser, which would fulfil the roadie/tourer/commuter/rigid role and no one really needs five bikes.

What would you do?

And yes, I am thoroughly ashamed of myself for asking such a question, but I really have thought myself into a corner on this one.

I bought the MTB in the first place because I gave up motorbiking!

You get your problem sorted?

I've been thinking of rationalising my quiver recently and reckon the carbon road steed is extraneous to requirements. But then I do already have a cross/tourer.

Let me know if you're flogging the carbon roadie - you're a [s]bit of a shortarse[/s] person of restricted growth too aren't you? 😀

But then I do already have a cross/tourer.

So do I, I suppose.
The steel Rockhopper really is a nice bike, and I have a certain sentimental attachment to it.
It can tour, commute and make me feel inadequate offroad in equal measure.

😆

TBH, depending on your commute, they can be the perfect bike.
I cannot say I have ever wanted to own one personally.

Nice spec on that Whyte, but it looks like it was designed by John Major.

I just couldn't own a matte grey (or matte anything, really) bike.
I'd die a little every time I looked at it.

If I were going down the CX route, it'd deffo be the Giant TCX.
And if I go for the roadie, it'd be the new cheapo Defy Composite, which I think looks rather nice:

Look reet that with a Rolls, some guards, a huge seatpack, a couple of cages and some black bar tape on it. 🙂

Nah, looks like the bicycle version of Mogadon.
Seriously, I'd fall asleep riding it.

If they were cheap enough and well engineered I'd have one tomorrow. 😀

And I don't really do niche - had issues with every bike from a non-mainstream manufaturer I've ever owned, sadly.
Never ever had a problem with a Marin, Trek or Specialized.
I'd buy a bike with ASDA on the downtube if it was decent quality and well priced.

What trick? Disappear up it's own bottom bracket?
And if anyone else suggests 650b, I shall hunt you down and treat you as I would a rabid dog. 🙂

Doesn't that Giant have that stupid proprietary seatpost? You'd be a mug to opt for one of those 🙂

Yep, and a silly headset standard as well.

However, my lovely LBS can do me one for a ridiculously good price.

Quite fancy a Ribble, but the lifetime Giant frame warranty is a very powerful draw.

Surprised at that, what with it being a new model.

I know.
But they are a very, very lovely LBS.

We've bought lots of shiny things from them, starting with my old Marin back in 1992.
