Hi guys ive got my money through from a claim ( not as much as i hoped but ok) i have about £1000 to spend on bike and gear like helmet, tools, clothes etc. I will be riding at gisburn, whinlatter, grizedale and lee/gragg quarry i have always fancied a long travel hardtail but not sure if there is any i can afford. would a 2nd hand one be a good move or are there other bikes out there that would be a good buy?
Complete 456 Evo @ £899, Inbred £100 cheaper?
If you're not in a desperate rush then build one from bargain bits from the classifieds?
I like the 456 Evo but doesnt leave me much money to get the gear i need
A short travel hardtail will probably be better for riding round trail centres on. Just bind something suitable 2nd hand with a lightweight frame, sensible geometry and some decent components.
Not sure if you'd be interested, but if you're not too worried about brands, LIDL have some quality bike kit in at the mo, so you could splash out on the 456 and still get sorted within budget.
blatant plug I've got a Cove handjob for sale around £550ish great condition, leaves plenty spare for clothing etc. Based in Manchester 😀
1 shed could be intrested u got any pics and spec of the bike
check my profile history for advert and contact. I will gladly email photos to you.
If buying s/h budget for a fork service and new consumables (chain, cassette, rings, cables, pads etc).
Anyone got any new bike suggestions?
Yeah secondhand hardtails are usually a good bet.
Do you want something lightweight or sturdy? What's more important - pedalling or downhill/jumping?
Just to get an idea what might suit you.
Looking to ride at the trail centres ive mentioned but more important to me is probably downhill/jumping
Short travel hardtail will be ideal then, if you're not hugely tall, a 4x style frame might be a good place to start.
I thought a 120mm+ travel would be best for trail centres doing the jumps and downhill bits
Lancslad, if you're local would you want a test ride?

It might well be. And a 4X bike might be rubbish at climbing.
But anyway, it's sale season and there are bound to be good deals on some decent bikes if you're not a brand snob.
Genesis are often available cheapish, I got a Saracen Zen earlier this summer with a great discount as a stopgap bike - and that could be just what you need (in fact drop me a line if you're a medium and fancy a 2ndhand bargain, email in profile).
Im about 40miles away from manchester 1 shed, i may want a test ride if i decide i fancy the bike

Not really, trail centres are relatively smooth and easy going. A responsive short travel hardtail will be much more fun!
YGM lancslad
davidtaylforth what bikes do you recommend then? i didnt think 100mm would be enough for jumps and drops at trail centres
100mm is plenty for the likes of Whinlatter, likes of an Inbred would probably be ideal.
What do people think of these bikes on-one inbred, grand canyon al 6.0, canyon yellowstone 5.0, radon zr team 6.0 they are 100mm travel bikes or on-one 456 evo, genesis core 26.3, revolution triad 1.0, saracen mantra expert
Lancslad give us ring tomorrow after 4, canyon is worth considering but remember to budget for what you need on top . Yes I'd love to sell you my bike but it sounds like some more advice wouldn't go amiss, sorry if I'm wrong.
lancslad - Memberdavidtaylforth what bikes do you recommend then? i didnt think 100mm would be enough for jumps and drops at trail centres
Weeelll it depends. Sometimes, shorter travel bikes are also built pretty lightweight and racy. So it's not that you need a lot of travel (I've had a blast at innerleithen and glentress on my rigid) but it's part of a package.
An awful lot of the all-rounder, sensibly-tough hardtails out there end up with 120mm or more of travel not so much because they need it but because that's what people think they need and so that's what sells.
Anyway. As for gear, you really don't need to spend a lot. Decent helmet, but try the sales. Otherwise, try TK Maxx, Mountain Warehouse, etc for suitable kit.
thanks 1 shed but how do i get your number to ring you?
On the email I sent you
