Spec Rockhopper is a cracking entry level HT for what you're after. I got one when i was getting back into it all and I'm still riding it now.

Get an On-One Scandal frame (26 or 29er, I've got the 29er) and build one of them up with some choice parts. Easily achievable with £800 especially if you know what to look for on the forums here or worst case scenario eBay.

£800 will get you some nice bikes second hand. Have a look out for year old Specialized Stumpjumpers - good buys.

Buy new, you'll get a decent first MTB at that price.

Go hardtail, try and get a decent air fork (Recon might be available at that price point) and hydraulic disc brakes.

Budget a set of winter tyres if its claggy your way.

Try your LBS, or here:

Can't go wrong with a Genisis io.

Any suspension at that price is gash and better avoided.

If your handy building bikes with components you like (even 2nd hand) I'd would look at the kinesis frame only options? I have one, my wife has one and so does my neighbour - HT, cheap and superb handling 🙂

The new Kinesis XC3 looks lush 🙂

It's worth taking a look at the Voodoo Bokor I think it is (£750 available only via Halfords)

It's received rave reviews and appears to be the best value £750 bike by a very large margin!

Bokor handles nicely. I liked mine before I switched to 29ers.

The sliding dropouts tend to slip a bit until the paint under them has been removed - that's under single speed use though.

Still got the frame in the attic.

Buying a bike brand new at that price point means you will get a lot of lower spec standard components, so when you want to sell on you will lose at lease 50%. I would say read the reviews, try a few of your mates HTs and buy one second hand on the classifieds. With that budget you can buy a second hand carbon HT bike origionally worth well over 1K. I saw a complete cotic soul sell for £650 with a decent spec recently, and i bought a complete on one inbred for £300 of ebay.

POSTED 18 MINUTES AGO # REPORT-POST2

But how much did it cost to replace all the worn out bits?

Why? Will not make you a better rider, you may not even like mtbing!!!

I have a few mates with bikes costing a fair bit more than your Van Nic and they have "basic" mtb ht bikes for the odd occasion they venture off-road.

You need a good frame and fork, you do not need xtr/xt anything imo.

Trekster,

If you know your bikes, you can spot what needs replacing and haggle on price. FYI, the inbred i bought came with xt hubs on 321 rims, pace R38 forks, XTR chainset, XTR bb, Carbon bars. Didnt replace anything because it was mint.

OK. Just me being cynical given other peoples experiences
The forks and carbon bars would have put me off tho 🙄
I cannot afford to buy something that I may or may not like, need a good test ride and then tend to keep for a few yrs. eg last bike bought is 1yr old, the one before that 5yrs and the one before that 10yrs. Therefore the buying then selling if not liking does not sit well with me.

Yup. Good bike. scotabroad has one of these and it seems to suit his riding very nicely.

I have found that carbon is a lot stronger then people think. Used to have a carbon hardtail that weighed nothing but kept up with the best of the hardtails. I am a engineer so i can take bits apart and can just about figure out how to put them back together again 😉

Honestly, i cannot see why anyone would want to buy new unless you had more money then sence or it was a bargin new price. The parts that do wear can be replaced cheaply.

And if you want to try MTBing get a cheap bike of classifieds, if you catch the bug then spend all your pocket money!
