the freeriders are less bulky and a bit more 'street'. The'r sole is flatenned off like classic vans. If you're not a poser and want some fivetens, go for the impact lo - i did and will never buy a different shoe again.

I definitely prefer the shoe padding protecting my feet (and ankles to an extent)

I really like the Basics, and they look a bit less "special" than the others.

Thats quite cheep for the Shimano AM40s.

I tried on both the freerides and the impact2s at my LBS, I bought the Sam hill Impact2 as i don't know if it was my imagination but the freerides felt thinner on my feet?

I like the basics, I agree they're less 'orthodontic' looking.

AM40s definately. Oops! But it's true, less outright grip so only "much more than you need" instead of "massively more than you need" but better made, better options, more weather resistant, and from what I can tell longer lasting.

I liked my Basics til they fell apart after less than a year- the sticky sole started delaminating from the structural sole, the insole just dissolved after winter (it's just cardboard), and various stitches started to burst. Seems to me that getting wet just kills them, which is unfortunate really in this country. All in all they have the build of a £20 shoe.

(my reference point here is an old pair of Vans, which I wore for years as regular shoes til they were worn out. Then, started cycling in them. They've had more use than the Basics and were half dead before they ever saw a pedal and they're still going strong)

Have just replaced my Sam Hill Impact 2's with

Not bike specific, but still has their legendary 'Stealth' sole
