So looking for an all rounder hardtail; something that can do a bit of woodsy trails, open moorland and the South downs way.

Current shortlist:
Whyte 629
pinnacle Ramin 4
Trek procaliber 6

anything else? Anyone got any of the above and comment?

Look for a Cube Reaction gtc carbon, they usually go for around that in the end of season sales.

What would that money get you in a Superfly? Better components vs. the Procaliber?

I mention it only because I bought one for a bit of everything but mostly woodsy singletrack and my local moorlands trails, and it was brilliant.

Currently serving as a CX bike right enough...

Chisel was well thought of in recent review.

If you can find last years Marin Nail Trail 7 still on sale anywhere that was going for ~1k and looked pretty good. This years back up to 1600

The carbon hardtails look great value. As does the pinnacle. Might pop to my local Evans and see what they have in stock

maybe too heavy?

2017 NS Eccentric Cromo - just built one for myself in 27.5+ but the stock 29er is ace. Small/Med/Large in stock and if you give us a call at the shop - Pedals Bike Care

We can do £1299 as that was going to be my clearance price if we ever had time to list them online.

The 629 for sure.

Fantastic frame, half decent kit to get going on a platform worthy of upgrading over time. The geometry is spot on on these, nice long reach, slack HA, low BB, shortish back end etc.

With your budget you'll be able to afford an instant dropper post upgrade too...

I was just coming on here to ask pretty much the same question and thinking a 29er would be best for my XC/trail needs!

Also add to the mix the Giant Fathom 1:

http://www.giant-shoreham.co.uk/gb/fathom-29er-1-2018

SLX 1 x 11, dropper, 780mm bars.

I looked at the Marin too - but the 2017 29er seems to be all sold out with only the 27.5 avaliable.

2017 NS Eccentric Cromo looks like a nice fram - what colours do you have and what spec are we looking at for £1300?

A friend of mine bought thisin grey, for the exact £1300 Specialized Chisel Comp

Superb bike.

If the Chisel is like the slighter more modern take on the Carve that the reviews indicate then that should be a pretty nice bike (my son has a Carve Expert).

At different ends of the XC / Trail sliding scale (imho) would be the following 2 bikes. The Whyte 629 that looks a really fun/playful bike. For XC mile munching and at the more traditional xc geometry end of the scale, a friend of mine picked up a Forme Alport, I can't recall the model but it was black with red graphics. He uses that for long distance XC rides and is really happy with it.*

*previously had a slack, longer travel fork, 650b HT but found that less suited to his riding.

I've got a Cube, probably a bit more xc than the Whyte but you can't go wrong with them for the money.

Trek Superfly 6 is worth looking at too with that budget.

Treks new X-Caliber nine looks good and is under budget . 2x11 XT mech and chainset , brand new frame for 2018 lower and slacker , internal dropper routing . Unless you wanted the decoupler then it looks a better bike than the Procaliber which costs £1300 .

x caliber sounds interesting, the NS eccentric looks lovely, but i'm not entirely convinced on its natural ability's tackling south downs way double (not a true double, staying overnight at 1 end)
although steel frame may help with compliance...?

I obviously have a vested interest but still 😀

Not a light build going on there, pretty much the polar opposite of the stock build or what you would aim for with the SDW!

+1 for Canyon. Very nice bikes, all day trail bike, nice on Trail Centre routes. Loved mine but had a hankering for a Cotic so swapped the bits over.

having swung a leg over the procaliber 6 that seems like it might be the best bet; brakes are crap; although its an easy upgrade...
