I've a 'new' boost frame on which I'd like to put a 1x11 drivetrain, preferably with a smaller oval chainring.

The frame has a BB92 Raceface pushfit bottom bracket with a 24mm spindle, which I could change.

AbsoluteBlack do 26t in Cinch, 28t in SRAM GXP Boost and 30t in 96bcd

I think the Shimano XT M8000 has a second smaller 64bcd spider - can I use that, or is the chainline off?

AB offer 26t and 28t chainrings in 64bcd, but not Boost.

As cost is a factor I'd probably buy used. Which crankset would you suggest?

Cinch offers lower gears, probably at a higher price. M8000 looks like the budget option, but can I go below 30t?

I ended up with an slx but didn't need to go that low. Other contender was cinch, think the aeffect would be better with the 24mm spindle in a bb92. Someone in here was recommending the carbon SRAM cranks so that could be a way to go

Is your current frame not boost ??? If it is then cheapest option is reuse your current cranks ....

What's the criteria? You mention M8000 so is weight really important ?
Do you really want smaller than 30T? (or just keeping options open?)

Yes the Affect lets me keep the bottom bracket, and cinch for the granny ring.

Any downsides for Aeffect compared to say M8000?

@stevextc The frame's boost and has a 24mm compatible bb but no cranks yet, hence my question.

Didn't think the M8000 were that heavy, they are cheaper which is good but I would like to go below 30t.

Apparently 650g for Aeffect cranks and 680g for XT M8000 without chainrings.

XT or SLX...

Can I use a 64bcd ring and will it work with the boost chainline? Has anyone tried this?

I meant your old frame/BB....

Didn't think the M8000 were that heavy,

They are light on a trail bike, heavy on a XC bike... 😀 ... but if weight isn't that important why not SLX?

I have 680/780 series chainsets and the SLX are identical except they have pedal steel inserts. They look really quite different but it's all clever shading. The only weight difference as far as I can tell is the pedal inserts. Haven't compared 7000/8000 in the flesh but unless weight is absolutely critical I'd go SLX on cranks over XT!

If weight isn't an issue (and strength/stiffness is) then Zee come in cheap.
...and isn't the main point of boost strength/stiffness????

they are cheaper which is good but I would like to go below 30t.

Can't really help (all my 1x are 104 bcd)... but I suspect the answer is specific to your frame.

A non-Boost crankset for a better chainline....

Kingdom Vendetta Boost frame here with standard XT M8000 chainset with a 30T chainring. Runs perfectly / superb shifting. Also the XT's had a wider Q factor than my previous cranks, this giving better clearance on chainstays.

Helpful reading from Wolftooth here on Boost and chain line etc.

It's a specific bolt pattern though - something to bear in mind. There is a Boost specific chainset though (53mm chainilne) which I've been using with a 30t ring. As 30t ovals exist I would also hazard a guess that a 28t round would also be fine (although personally I'd stay with a 30 and run a bigger cassette, if nothing else to reduce chainring wear and maintain a semi-decent higher gear).

I went for M7000 (SLX) on my new build purely so I can put a 30t or even 28t on it without faffing about, plenty of people make chainrings to fit them now and they look pretty smart. 70 quid from CRC for the cranks without rings or bottom bracket too.

Get an Aeffect and a oneup cinch switch chainring and carrier. You can switch from 28t to 30 or 32 in a few seconds. They do regular, boost 148 and super boost. Oval and round rings. I'm going with this on my next sl.

Aeffect is a bargain, IMO. Ubyk have them at a great price, ring included.

North Shore Billet (NSB) do a 28t narrow wide ring for the M8000 cranks. It mounts, as you suggest, to the inner chainring bolts but is machined in such a way that the chainline is correct. I've been using one for well over a year and love it. They can be bought in the UK here:

EDIT: The NSB 28t for M8000 cranks is round rather than oval. (And at £32.99 they're great value).

Thanks for all the input and the info.

I've actually got a couple of old XTR 3-speed Hollowtech cranksets which were lighter and stiffer than FSA and SLX at the time. And a near-new Hope crankset and BB which I think I'll sell. I don't think the chainline will work well with smaller chainrings.

So it looks like Aeffect is the winner. £90 cranks, 24mm spindle, and cinch offers a wide choice of smaller chainrings including AbsoluteBlack oval rings which isn't available with the other systems.
