Where to watch cycle cross ?

I've developed a bit of an interest in cycle cross, partly because it is such a bonkers thing to do (pedal round in the mud using a road bike) and partly as my current cycling hero is Wout Van Aert. Any suggestions of good places to watch? I don't have any TV sports channels and I don't subscribe to GCN+. Any good free ways to watch that you recommend ?

Also - how do I find out what real life events are taking place near me?

Thanks for your tips!!

Think it was his left bollock that took the strain 🙂

You can often find races on YouTube usually minus commentary, which may be a good thing depending on how you look at it, though to be honest the Eurosport team are actually very good.

For real life events start with British Cycling website.

Not these days that is legal.

GCN+ is well worth it for the racing, you get far more than CX. You'll get year round coverage so the classics, grand tours etc. Isn't it about £40.

Hi
GCN+ is the best place now for cycling of all flavours. It has an app so you can cast it to your tv or vis your lap top. If you are getting into it then you want the commentary.
The national champs are near kendal on the 14/15 Jan. It is the only uk race where pidcock might show up with his jersey on so worth a shout.

Plus all the documentaries.

Most regions of the country have a local league, but if you're going to make the effort to go and spectate, you may as well enter a race too. Gravel or MTB bikes are perfectly fine, unless you have podium bothering aspirations.

GCN+ is pretty good value I think, although much of the cross season has gone.
PS MVdP>WVA

I gave up on GCN+ as the service reliability was poor. There was often no sound or commentary at the start. I think they missed the start of the WChamps women's xco or maybe cx the last time around too.

Go to watch a race, the worlds in February is at Hoogerhide, just north of Antwerp and is quite an event, a cross between bike racing, a rave with crap europop and a massive Belgian piss up - what’s not to like!

Or Eurosport.

If you've got Eurosport you'll find CX on there, we've got a Tivo Box and i set a series link so it automatically record the various series if I'm not in or allowed control of the telly (most of the time).

It works quite nicely if you've got a spare hour and can just squeeze in watching a Men's or Women's race you might have missed.

I had GCN when they did the £20 deal when it launched, it's pretty much the same races but of course they have them Ad free and old rounds on demand, decided not to re-sub for full price last year though.

Edit: probably best to Subscribe to the UCI channel on YT, you'll at least get highlights. poke about a bit and you'll probably find other channels covering some of the other series too...

I can highly recommend a weekend trip to Belgium to see a CX race. They are very popular with the locals and the course can sometimes go thru a bar! I was blown away with the sheer speed and fluidity of the top riders...Beers good too.....;)

It has happened once that I recall this season, a few glitches with commentary but generally it's been excellent.

It's also worth finding out about your local CX league if you want to watch some live racing without jumping on a ferry, probably not on Parr with the Belgians but still very entertaining and a very good spectator sport...

If I can't find it on Eurosport I can usually find it on YouTube, the challenge is just knowing what to search for! The races can be under various names sometimes e.g. Louhenoult = Azencross and Baal = GP Sven Nys etc.

I gave up on GCN+ as my phone wouldn't talk to my TV and my laptop is too ancient, they need an app you can watch directly on your TV!

You can install gcn on a firestick, it might be available on other smart platforms?

Very much coming to the end of the season now. The UK National Championships is up at Milnthorpe on the weekend of 14th - 15th January if you can get up to that? Westmoreland County Showground. Should be a cracking weekend.

To watch the pro stuff you really do need either EuroSport or GCN+. EuroSport can be a bit hit and miss with what it shows, GCN+ shows everything. To be honest it's so close to the end of the season now, you're actually better waiting until there's a special offer on (usually around the time of the Tour de France... 😉 ) and then taking out a subscription which will see you through the 2023/24 CX season.

I usually watch the races the next day on YouTube. Sometimes there is no commentary or Flemish/Dutch commentary. That way you get to hear the correct pronunciation of the Belgian riders' names! 🙂

Belgium. With beer and frites. It’s like football in Brazil. A national obsession. Still time to hop on the Eurotunnel.

We have discovery+ subscription, £7 a month I think and it has sport on it. Lots of CX either catchup or on live

Another happy GCN subscriber here. It's not perfect but I don't know where else I could get so much cycling content.

Race in about an hour in Wout's back yard - Herentals (women's is on now).

If ye are all not too busy working that is. MvdP and WvA both go but TP sitting it out after his crash.

Where to watch cycle cross ?

Find some town center park, generally the higher the likelihood of your bikes getting swiped the greater the chance of there being a CX race on 😉

Many thanks to everyone for your suggestions. I have just subscribed to GCN+ in time to see WVA thwarted at the last by a puncture. He still goes much faster on a flat wheel than I could hope to go downhill with a tailwind. Going to a race in Belgium is very tempting but I'm not sure MrsJ will enjoy standing in a muddy field drinking strong beer and watching cyclists. Ironically I used to live up the road in The Hague and never took advantage :-(. Oh well !!

Also looking foreard to the spring classics - the cobbles of Flanders are a long way from Alps de Huez!

Where are you based?

There the final round of the National Trophy is this weekend in Kent and the Sunday hosts the UCI registered races. The Clanfield International is on Saturday this coming weekend too, in Hampshire - Cameron Mason and Tom Mein are both down to race

Excellent performance from WVA yesterday (Thursday). Having no commentary is restful but I went away to make a cuppa at a key point and when I came back WVA had taken a big lead. I wasn’t sure, without commentary, if it was because MVDP had had an accident or if Wout had just powered away.

MVDP had back issues and WvA was properly on his game yesterday.

We watch it nearly live, free on YouTube. Seems to be a legit source, although is the Eurosport feed without a doubt.
Easily found through searching.

Not that we are tight at all, but I'm done with paying yet another subscription to watch TV, when we already pay a small fortune for most of them.

Great racing today at the Benidorm WC. The fastest tracks don't always produce the best racing but this one was a scorcher - another classic duel from a season of epic contests. vA and vdP going hammer and tongs that last lap.

Fastest laps at 28 kmh with stairs, dismounts and a sand section!

Agreed, Garry - both M & W races were fantastic.  Watched after getting home from a part-frozen race at Southampton and it made a nice contrast.  Dust !  Remember that ?
