We are driving down to south of France in early August and are passing by Grenoble and I have always wanted to ride up Alpe D’Huez. Anybody stayed in Bourg d’Oisans? We are in an 8.0m motorhome and want to stop on a campsite for a few nights. Needs to be somewhere within walking distance of town/cafes etc for MrsSlug. We’ve looked at Camping Koawa le Colporteur and Camping La Recontre du Soleil. I’ll probably be taking gravel bike but may take Mtb too. Any other routes worth a look at 3 or 4 hours long. Thanks

There are two campsites right at the bottom of the climb. The one of the left is larger and has a swimming pool. Both take camper vans IIRC.

Short walk into town from either (5 or 10 mins).

Bit further up the road, but we camped at this site https://g.page/campingdelameije?share in La Grave. Its basically at the bottom of a glacier and it has amazing views.

We stayed in the campsite on the right of the road to Alpe d'Huez (La Cascades ?). 10-15 min walk into the middle of town.

Good site that would cope with your M/H, but would probably need to book.

Loads of road riding around there, and a lovely, gentle off-road (picnic) ride up the valley past the 'Cascade of Piss' (might have missed an 'e' off the end there 😉 )

Serious MTB in La Grave.

We rode a loop via Alpe d'Huez - The climb up to Alped'Huez early in the day was reasonably easy (I wasn't trying to break any records), but the subsequent climb at Pont Freney(?) in the full heat of the day nearly made me cry and almost caused a divorce.

If anyone needs a place to stay in this area.

20 mins away in Venosc is Chalet Moreville. I have stayed a few times for La Marmotte and just general cycling trips

If you can, ride up to La Berarde while you're there - it's an out/back on one of the most beautiful roads in that part of the Alps imo. Alpe d'Huez is a tick for sure but as Alpine rides go in general it's not that remarkable aside from the historic appeal - meant to be a better ride if you carry on to the Sarenne road though I've not done that loop yet. Couldn't resist the descent of Huez after all that climbing.
Another cracker of ride there is the D219 balcony road going SE then up and over onto the D210, to the Col Ornon and back to Borg.

I stayed in a campsite somewhere in the middle of town, Camping Koawa Colporter does ring a bell, I was in a tent, so can't comment for motorhomes.

Couple of road bike tips, though. Once you get up to Huez, keep going up and over the Col de Sarenne. Only been in the tour once, the year they did the mountain twice.

Another great ride - head south towards Ornon, then up to Villard Reymond and then to Villard Notre Dame. There's about 200m of gravel if I remember rightly. Then the descent down from V.Notre Dame is stunning - cut into the rock face. Take a decent bike light though, there's a tunnel with a bend in it...

Col de Glandon is good - but LONG. I ended up having to scrump wild strawberries by the side of the road. It wasn't pretty...

Enjoy! 🙂

Camping Koawa Colporter

Same one I stayed at. Nice cabin/chalets, felt posh but was cheap.

Is same same as

You can pick up cycle route suggestions for rd and MTB in tourist information - they provide great little booklets. Also try the website bike Oisans.

Definitely do the balcony rides on either side of the valley. You can also descent from the alpe towards Allemont - a lovely descent.

La Berade ride is sublime.

Col de sarenne via the balcony route and back down the 21 bends or to allemont and back along the valley bottom is a good day out. There are some good places above AdH on sarenne road to park up for the night as well.

Cheers folks. Looks like the site in middle of Bourg is well suited. Now to get on zwift and ride up and down the Alpe a few times!!!. Will look at the Le Berade as a couple have recommended. Thanks
