I live near Maidenhead and I have a free day tomorrow (2nd November). I’m going to ride my bike and was planning to go to Aston Hill but I have a feeling it’s going to be super wet and slippy.

Has anyone been there lately? How is it?

A good alternative might be Peaslake which if I remember correctly is a bit more sandy. Can anyone tell me if that’s still decent or is it also a slopfest?

Where else might be worth a visit within an hour’s drive from Maidenhead? I know Swinley forest will be okay but I’m after some bigger hills really.

Chicksands bike park is fun but not a long ride.think you need to book.great all weather too.not just for people who like air.

Thank you. Chicksands looks like a good option except that it’s 1hr30 away and I have to be back by 3pm for school pickup so need to keep it under an hour.

Surrey Hills your best bet, it'll still be muddy but not terrible
Aston won't be that bad, surface 2 air is more rideable in the wet than others

It may not be raining but the ground is pretty waterlogged, there will be good ridable trails in the Surrey Hills but loads that will be a slop fest and riding terribly, unless you know the area it’s going to be a lottery.

Your best bet is probably Rogate bike park it would be riding nice at the moment, it’s all sand so rides better wet than dry, easy road climb to session the bottom and easy enough to pedal 95% all the way to the top.

just come to the ridgeway. Park in Streatley at the end of Rectory Road, cycle on ridgeway for a few hours, turn around

or quite a few loops as well - loads of bridleways/by-ways that'll have no-one on.

Surely the Ridgeway and the Chilterns will be approaching full bog mode by now? Peaslake is running ok, plenty of mud but its loose and sandy.

Swinley maybe? always fairly consistent in poor weather?

Swinley's probably your best bet, it stay pretty clag-free even when totaly soaked.

The infamous Swinley grinding paste means your brake pads etc won't thank you but it's better than most places down south in the dead of winter.

Rode Ashridge last week and it's already horrendous there, will be giving it a wide berth until Spring now unless we get a proper cold snap.

Swinley got a LOT of rain at the weekend... i mean a LOT....

But it'll still ride pretty well i'd say

Ridgeway, won't be pretty in parts, but OK in many bits.

There'll be some big puddles at Swinley, but on the whole the official trails hold up well after heavy rain.

If you're looking to ride Surrey Hills, the trails on Holmbury Hill drain the best, with the exception of Yogurt Pots, which will be very wet in places.

Thanks for all the input!

I reckon I'll try for the Holmbury Hill area, I rode there a few weeks back so I've got a pretty good idea of the trails and reckoned that they'd be okay but it's good to have that confirmed.

I'm sure Swinley would be very rideable but I'm looking for something different as I live quite nearby I've ridden there a lot. All the other suggestions sound decent too, though as they're a little further from home they'd mean cutting down on cycling time.

I wouldn’t be going anywhere near the ridgeway. Even up towards The beacon will be a trudge, I can’t imagine what it’s like further west.

Minley, Tunnel Hill, Porridgepot etc? All depending on military manoeuvres of course.

What is the ridgeway? And where is it?

Is it just a bridle way?

Any forest area will be generally sodden unless it's on sand, though if the rock is close to the surface then it may well be fine, so hilly or sandy foresty
Based on past experience the Ridgeway, or at least most of it will have been churned by tractors, and a lot of it is on heavy clay. Last time I was there we got no further than 30m before the wheels jammed.
I was out in forestry and fields yesterday. Mortimer Forest was fine due the rocky tracks, sheltered NW facing fields were sodden and the exposed Hanway Common was dry and hard.
