You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Coming up for the week tomorrow to share a cottage with family.
Where's good to ride locally? I will be on my own so thinking trail centres?
Thanks
Macclesfield Forest has some good riding and isn't too far. Start from Wildboar Clough or The Leathers Smithy pub.

No trail centres around Buxton.
However there is a good loop via Whaley Bridge. I'll try and get hubby to post up the loop for you.
Or mentioned above the Macc forest loop (which is only a little bit in forest).
It's pretty snowy and frozen up high at the moment. Take care.
Thanks everyone.
Old Mac road up to the Cat and Fiddle pub cross the road onto the BW and onto 3shires head etc.Mind if its covered in snow it could be very iffy a lot of rocks around that area.If you want a gentle spin you have the Parsley Hay trail.Mind the Staffordshire moorlands look quite bleak in the summer 😀
I would recommend either of these two books

The Macclesfield Forest Classic looks like a decent ride. Is it rideable at the moment given the weather?
I'll say yes, but dependant on the condition of the snow/ice on Charity Lane, Danebower Hollow and Cumberland Clough, oh and your skill level. The rest of the route is fine, look out for tyre tracks on the right heading into the trees as you come down off the view point in the forest.
Christmas Eve on Charity it was about 8" of heavy snow with a 3/4" ice top and freezing cold water running underneath. Once you lost momentum it was hard to get going again. Didn't bither with DH or CC as both would have been A) a walking session and B) hard going even DH

I was going to suggest a trail out by the old oak tree, where the big hay field is. The start is marked by a piece of black volcanic glass rock that looks like it has no earthly business being there.
But then I thought it wasn't that funny 🙁
HaydnPD - What's your email, the one in you profile just bounced back
We have a reasonable amount of snow/ice in Matlock/Darley Dale at the moment, being a good few inches on the tops - I dread to think what it's like above Buxton and over the Cat towards Macc at the moment
Hi Carlos
Email address haydn underscore durrant at hotmail dot co dot uk
Probably won't ride until weds / Thursday so conditions may improve by then I guess.
We've 6 inches at Middleton By Youlgrave, friends at Flagg have a good 8 inches. Sadly the roads are like skating rinks at the moment, it has given it warming up on NYD. Buxton does have its own climate though. Check www.buxtonweather.co.uk
HaypDP - you should have Mail now 😉
6 to 8 inches in Over Haddon today and ice everywhere! I tryed to ride to Buxton two nights ago and had to turn back at Millers Dale due to blizzard/whiteout conditions! The thing with Buxton is to remeber that it can snow on ANY day of the year.Years ago a cricket match had to be postponed until they cleared the pich of snow IN JULY!

Kind of you to take the time. Much appreciated.

Bit of an update - Just got back in from a local loop and all the above is rideable, just take care on the icy bits. Plenty of walkers have been about squishing it down and the cold weather is keeping it firm.
Oddly Cumberland Clough is riding well given the ice but the bits in the trees that aren't marked on the map are boggy so best avoided.

Check out the webcam at Flash, I always us that as a guide to how much snow is around.

I rode Macc Forest route yesterday, bit icy but totally rideable
Are you looking for doorstep riding or are you prepared to jump in the car first? There's loads of choice if you don't mind 20/30 minutes drive.
If Bunnyhop is thinking of the old classic Buxton circuit that I'm thinking of, it's probably quite a good time to do it. Normally it's not that technical with a lot of road work and is often horribly muddy at this time of year. However there should still be some snow around on the back roads and the muddy bits should be frozen. That's where I'd head if I wanted a doorstep ride from Buxton and it's easy to extend over to 3 Shires Head/Macc Forest if you want a big day out.
Bunnyhop said I'd come along to provide details of a route via whaley, I've found this version on Strava - it's not mine
http://app.strava.com/activities/80733756
If you can't see it then give me a shout and I'll knock up another version. This one's longer than mine as it includes a loop round mac forest that you could easily miss out.
^yep that's the one I was thinking of, but remember you can start and finish anywhere in Buxton since it's all road work in and out. Used to live right next to the old Roman Road on that loop so did it a few times in the old days. Worth tagging on the Macc Forest loop if you're fit.
