You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Morning all,
Looking at an impromtu trip away with the trail bike over the summer. I'd like to ride about 3 days in a row and be located within 4 hours drive of Nottingham.
Ideally hit 2 trail centre loops per day, so maybe about 4-5 hours riding each day with a lunch stop in the middle of loops. Maybe that for first 2 days and then just one loop on final day.
Camping ideally to keep cost down
Any recommendations of how to make this work well? Was thinking probably Wales- but where abouts?
Recommendations on quiet camp sites with good facilities in areas where there are a number of descent trail centres within a short drive would be ace!
Thanks in advance
Cwmcarn is the obvious one with a campsite on site.
3 days though... You'd have to go other places too I'd say.
Coed y Brenin has loads of trails and there is a lot nearby too. You can camp in Dolgellau. The campsite not far in to the village is ok. Stayed there a few times. Ride cody, ride Cadair Idris, ride Mawdacch trail then Pont Scethin.
Lots to do like.
Done Coed y before- really like it and would happily go back.
Not heard of cadaid, idris, mawdacch and scethin. will look them up.
Ta!
Currently toying with the idea of doing glentress and innerlethen and hamsterley on the way back... possibly a bit too far and am I right in thinking it's midge season up there?
Don't waste your precious days off driving up and down the country's motorways!
Stick with Wales . . . or Scotland . . . or even the Lake District.
Cheers for that, I didn't mean as well as wales. I meant one or the other.
Not going to do lakes as I get lost too easily so want waymarked trails.
I'm leaning towards driving a bit further and doins some of the 7 stanes I think- just could do with knowing if this is possible with midges this time of year and camping? I don't want to be mega munched by insects as that won't be any fun at all!
Stay at Glentress campsite, or Rosetta peebles and have your fill of trails round there. As you say you could do Hammers on the way back as a stop to break the journey - you'll drive past it. Or head to either Afan Bryn bettws or Afam Glycorrwg - camping right on the trails with loads to do round there trails wise. I would say you'd probably ride more miles in Afan, but the quality of the trails will be better in Scotland. So its whether you like just being in the saddle, or you want some gnar.
Go to the Lakes and buy a map
We did North Wales the weekend just gone - so much riding around there. We did Coed Y Brenin / Antur Stiniog / Snowdon on 3 consecutive days.
Equally you have the Marin trail at Betws y Coed, Penmachno and zllandegla which all had marked trails ( although it’s hard to get lost in Snowdon as it’s one main path up that’s reallu do-able if you have a bike - then a choice of 2 paths down which are rideable).
There is a campsite literally at the base of Snowdon, but there are loads of cottages / bunkhouses to rent around the area.
We booked on a Tuesday for the fri / sat / sun so lots of places were fully booked already. I found a 4 person bunkhouse for £18 per person per night in between CYB and Antur. It was basic but clean and did the job for somewhere to sleep and the lady who ran it was really friendly.
Hamsterley ..Kielder ...Glentress ..Whinlatter....
Easy enough to find campsites near all ..
Just a thought - if you do south Wales I’d consider Brechfa as a good lap of he red/black joined up (42kms), as well as looking at Black a Mountain Cycle Centre for an uplift day and then maybe Afan or Cwmcarn. I’d think that was more of a drive from Nottingham than North Wales though.
Cheers for the input.
Decided upon staying near Dalbeattie, doing some of the Stanes across a few days.
Best order some "skin so soft"
Anything else keep midges at bay near a tent?
Eat marmite apparently
I also use the midge coils they're a insense type thing
Eat marmite apparently
I’d rather be savaged by midges....
