You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
I’m looking to give my Rooster a bit of a face lift. It’s my workhorse bike, the school run, quick mid week blasts and the bike I ride if I’m lending a newbie my best bike to get them into off road riding.
But the drive train is knackered and the wheels could do with an upgrade too.
I can find some good deals on 11spd and 12spd but it’s a 135mm rear end and current rear hub will only take 10spd.
I’d also be possibly tempted by a wide range 8 or 9 speed. Any good deals out there?
current rear hub will only take 10spd.
if it’ll take 10 speed, there will be an 11 or 12 speed cassette that will fit. SRAM SX and NX, for example.
Microshift advent x at CRC??
You can get a whole Microshift Acolyte groupset for about £60 on CRC at the moment, including a Sram chain.
Wide range 8 speed (12-46) and very robust. I've put 2000km on a set this year and it's been faultless so far.

but this should fit a 10sp Shimano freehub too

Superstar wheels at 75% off and you can select QR end caps on the hubs. Unlikely to match price / quality with that discount!

What’s the code for the 75% off?
Found the code 👍
Benefit of Acolyte over Advent X? Or vice versa?
Kind of like the idea of 8 speed but I don’t have a chain - whereas I do have a new 11 spd chain kicking around whic will apparently work with the 10spd
I think it's 75WHEEL (from the Superstar wheel thread).
The scrolling banner in the home page links to the offers.
@ibnchris - Sram pc830 is £3.99 on CRC.

I've run Advent and Acolyte, and actually prefer the 8spd Acolyte.
Shifting is good, chains are (very) cheap, and overall feels a bit more robust.
I run it on two bikes now.
It's not as refined as other brand's 11/12 speed stuff, but you're paying the same price for a whole groupset as an SLX rear mech or cassette!
Advent X is a genuinely good bit of kit. Been told it runs better with slightly narrower 11 speed chain but not tried that.
No reason you can't get an 11spd cassette on the same HG freehub, but current Deore comes in 4100 10 speed options at decent prices, though it might be a different cable pull than old Shimano ten speed, but no matter if you're replacing the lot.
And which 8 speed shifter do you go with? The one review is not good…
This one...

...one bad review doesn't mean it's crap, I've had zero problems and I'd say the quality is equivalent to Deore level kit.
Not tried the Acolyte but have Advent X on 3 bikes all running well.
I’m liking the idea of a £4 chain. Have gone 8spd. Bring back the days of everlasting geoupsets…I hope!
Ibnchris ... I know it's unlikely but if you ever consider selling ...I'm looking for a similar bike/f+f . Not sure about sizing but I normally ride frames with 60 cm ish virtual TT' but can adapt a few cm either way . I'll message you anyhow despite the unlikely nature of my request !
Thanks
