I remember 10 years ago there were several incidences of eBay/Chinese batteries going BANG whilst on charge and burning people's kitchens down. Is this still the case?

I need a 4x18650 pack something like this:

https://gb.lightmalls.com/black-color-8-4v-4-18650-battery-pack-for-bicycle-light?gclid=Cj0KCQjwpNr4BRDYARIsAADIx9yyRulL489bO9qguUPBHH5h9jV30diU-AfMA3vC_RE****iqXUYFo-caAv-sEALw_wcB

and was wondering if the risk is still there.

Always risky with unbranded batteries.
I only use LG Sony Panasonic etc

I've had a few 18650's over the years. Main problem has been crappy chargers. I did catch one smoking... Other prob is seller inventing power capacities than often don't exist. If buying from China, I've found Liitokala batteries & chargers to do the job.

see aliexpress charger

Torchy is your man

https://www.torchy.co.uk/

Had him build me a battery pack a few years ago as the original one for the light stopped working and the manufacturer no longer made them

Torchy's battery pack has been spot and had the added bonus of lasting a lot longer then the original pack

Check out his blog

Another vote for MTB Batteries here - https://www.mtbbatteries.co.uk/ - service and prices are phenomenal, and has done custom work for me no problem.

Not in my experience. I had a problem with a 6-cell battery that was approx 14months old and he wasn’t in the least bit interested in helping.

In contrast, MtbBatteries couldn’t have been more helpful.

I've used torchy & MTB batteries. Torchy is not great at communication whereas the support from smudge at MTB batteries is awesome 🙂
