Hi, I'm hoping that some experts out there will be able to help me with this one, although I'm sure there have been thousands of similar posts before so apologies for going over old ground!

A few rides ago I started to get a creaking in my bottom bracket. The cups were overdue a clean anyway so I stripped it down for a good clean and regrease. The noise didn't go away so I invested in a new hope bb with gxp converter. At the same time I stripped down my spd's and gave them a good clean and regrease. Still didn't get rid of the noise so I took the crankset off, took all the chainrings off for a good clean and put it all back together again. Still no joy.

Thought it could be from the seatpost but it is still there when out of the saddle. My bike is riding as smooth as anything now and with my iPod on, riding is great. But it sounds like a bag of spanners! The only thing I can think now is that my chainring bolts are screwed, could this be the case?

One thing that threw me this morning was when I got a puncture in the back tyre, fixed it up and put it back together and the noise seemed to go but gradually came back during the ride.

Any suggestions anyone? The crankset is a Stylo GXP.

Checked your rear QR is tight and greased?

My bike currently makes a proper racket and I'm fairly sure that it's because the bearings in the rear wheel are shot, any play in the rear hub?

Thanks for the reply. It's pretty tight, I'll show it a bit of grease later and give that a go, anythings worth a try especially when it comes free!

Had an annoying creak/clicking that I'd have bet the family silver on being my EBB. It turned out to be the "cage" on my M647 SPD's.

I only had the bearings services a couple of months ago. Took weeks for sherwood pines to get hold of some fulcrum bearings but they've been running sweet ever since. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Could be the spd cages, worth a scrub and a spray of gt85!

could be a lot of things, but if you let us know what bike it is someone may well have a definitive answer.

It's a Kinesis Maxlight xcpro3 that I built up last year, fulcrum red metal 5's and rs recons. Full SRAM x9 gears with Stylo crank.

Try sticking a different rear wheel in and seeing if the creak goes. I had the same problem as you, thought it was the bb so replaced that, didn't get rid of the noise so I greased up everything I could, still no joy. I stuck my mates wheel in, rode up and down the road and no noise. Took my wheel to my lbs for a service and it turns out I had a fairly sizeable crack in the hub body, I can't tell you how nice it is to ride without a creak that's been bothering you for weeks 🙂

The chainring bolts are tight, should they ever need replacing?

I'll take the cassette off later and check the freehub.

Thank you both!

It's your lower headset bearing that's slowly dying. Pop the forks out and have a look.

Check the mech hanger, it can get grit and crap behind it and creak, and stem and bar fixings, and also some fork crowns can creak,

Only put a new superstar headset on a month or so ago. I only get the noise when pedalling, in and out of the saddle, the mech hanger could be a good call, its never been off.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions

Agree with crikey. I had a bag of balls that I was sure was in my bottom bracket. After significant time it came to light it was my headset. Replacing it cured my bottom bracket bag of balls!

Just to show you it can be anything. In my case my 'BB noise' turned out to be me not greasing the freehub slines before replacing the cassette.

it's quite embarrassing when the click click click noise every pedal stroke turns out to be the zip pull on your jacket tapping the zip 😳

I had a similar issue with my Kinesis Racelight recently, despite a new bottom bracket. It turned out to be a 'dry' skewer in the front hub. Put some 3-in-1 oil on the skewer and a dab of grease on each axle end where they sit in the forks and the noise disappeared instantly.

I feel your pain...

I managed to solve my creaking by doing the following (sadly not 100%sure what fixed it!)

Greased and re-torqued ALL bearings/faces
Greased skewers/axles
Greased seatpost and seat rails (I think this was the fix)

Making sure the bolts are all tightened to spec is definately worth checking though. Good luck!
