In the market for a pair of 29er forks for a new bike and would ideally like a pair for forks that can be adjusted externally, like my old RS Reba & Revolution and Fox talas? I'd be quite happy with just the two settings, 120mm and 140mm?

Are there such forks about these days? 29er, ideally boost and plus compatible?

New bike is likely to be Solaris Max Longshot and demo'd with 130mm forks at weekend and it did very well. A 140mm would good on the downs and a 120mm better for XC....130mm may be a good compromise for both

Now that bottom brackets are nice and low, a travel adjust fork lets you drop it even further for constant pedal strikes... And with a steep seat angle you don't need to shorten the fork to climb well.

I’d agree that on the fly travel adjustment is pretty much redundant now. I’d actually include lockouts in that too. I honestly don’t remember the last time I used a suspension lockout.  Just one more thing to go wrong...

It's funniy isn't it... I was just thinking this the other day, but hadn't really given it MUCH thought.

I guess as fork damping is so good, and geo is more sorted, things like this are no longer needed..

I had a 150/20 Talas and always forgot to put it back to 150 after a long climb.  The fork felt a bit rubbish too compared to a "normal" 150 Fox fork.  Bike geo and fork developments seem to make them redundant to me.

I expect most folk realised +/-10mm makes **** all real difference, and the marketeers found other new stuff to sell to us.

I’ve always thought they were a bit pointless —although my 2004 Kona hardtail now has 2006 Revelation u-turns. It is better up steep hills running the 100mm instead of 130mm - front wheel lifts less.

However I keep forgetting to wind them back out again so think I’m just going to run them at 130mm most of the time.

Basically, the only good height adjustment forks- u-turn- got binned, because turning the dial was too much like hard work. That just left "climb mode" forks that only worked well in one position or the other, like TALAS and dual position. And then as above, those stopped being so useful as geometry got better.

Genuine height adjust- ie, forks that work equally well at all lengths- is just as useful as it always was, it's just nobody makes them.

I loved my 140 120 dual position revelation forks, they stopped the bike doing mini wheelies when climbing. Perfect for a 130 travel bike. Sold them to make way for pikes.

The 150 120 are just a bit too big now.

It's a shame the lowest it goes is 120.

I still get wheelie Bob on my specialized stumpjumper when climbing and that's got modern geometry and standard 140 pikes.

If they did a better range I'd gladly have another set

I used to have Fox Talas on a Cove Hummer, as soon as I figured out my front travel sweet spot, I removed the Talas cartridge and fitted a normal cartridge, which was 125mm IIRC.

I found the travel adjust useful for that.

The old u-turn pikes were ace, you could dial them in for just the right amount of length to suit a bike. Never used it for climbs right enough, that would take ages...

Maybe one day they will invent a fork with a travel adjust brain and travel changes automatically depending on the bike going up or down?

Obviously it will come with a new standard steerer that won't fit any of the existing bikes and a different 120 boost plus hub

I fear this will happen....

And some law will enforce that your bike has some electronics to track you down.
