Bought a fair bit of stuff off from here in the past, but since the switch to the Classifieds it feels like fewer STW’ers sell on STW (or is it just me?)

So besides these Classifieds, PinkBike, Fleabay, does anyone else have other forums or sites where I can peruse and buy bits and pieces?

Facebook marketplace. Use judgement to filter out the dodgy stuff.

Does Facebook marketplace require a Facebook account? I loathe it.

Same issues here - used to get a lot of kit off here - had no problems and prices were ok
Tried a few Pinkbike ads and got messsed about - but just had some good deals from really decent sellers so would use again
It ain’t going to happen but I wish we had the old classifieds here!

I'd have thought so, but you could sign up and have your account invisible and shut everything down I suppose. Might be easier just to avoid 🙂

I've sold a few bits on pinkbike recently but got messed about by a buyer once not reading the advert. There are Facebook selling groups as well as the normal market place. Pink bike is the most simple and plentiful I think.

Love or hate but I've had some good buys from gumtree.

I just bought something off here today but there really doesn't seem to be much on these days.

Pinkbike is probably my favourite classifieds, even if it does have more SWOP FOR XBOX.

I find eBay still comes up with the goods sometimes. Just won a set of XT trail pedals for £37 (look nearly new).

I've had my Wife's Pace frame on here for a while and barely had a sniff! Need to get it up in more places really.

eBay sometimes but rarely. Missed a 350 rear hub for £40 last night due to my own stupidity.

+1

I used to check the for sale page daily but now its just lost its appeal so I rarely bother.

eBay still offers the best buyer protection IMHO even of it's not the bargain that it used to be. You just have to be patient.

I used to buy and sell a lot on here and look daily too...before it was ruined. Never even look now.

Does anyone know why the STW powers decided to retire the old buy/sell forum... and replace with what we have now?

Presumably it was purely a monetisation thing, as the ‘premium’ ads cost ££ vs free previously, but judging by the same ones appearing again and again on the new classifieds, they don’t seem to be hugely in demand.

Were there other reasons I’m missing? Basically I’m alluding to ‘why can’t we have it back’!

Facebook market place - There are loads of good sale groups around Newcastle as well. No postage as you can go and pick it up/look at it. Chances are I know of the person as well in the majority of cases - friends of friends.

Yeah I use to always be on here buying bits and selling but I hate the new classified! I’ve even used the payed bit on there and didn’t even get a single inquiry it does seem to have fallen on its arse since they changed it.

Pinkbike is ok don’t like eBay because of the charges but have used it once in a blue moon.

Actually been sat on a set of plus wheels because I don’t really know where to sell them now 🤦‍♂️

Just sold some stuff, a couple of items on here, pinkbike, retrobike and eBay. Pb was biggest hassle and quiet on here compared with the past.

The old classifieds was where I got most of my stuff. I can't splash loads on kit but it meant I could pick up newish gear. My current 29er hardtail frame and fork were off here. Mint condition and a bargain. Some pleasant transactions with people too. Just is not the same now.

I sense it is getting harder to make the magazine etc sustainable but I would have been happy with the old classifieds requiring a small fee or making it premier only content. Sure those running stw know the score but I do feel losing the old classifieds has been detrimental to the stw community in that we were all helping each other out with kit and stuff.

I have a pile to get rid of.
Put a wheel on, brand new Mavic Crossride £40 posted. Not even a cheeky bid came in. The volume must be down 80%. Been using it for several years and now it’s belly up.

Just had a look and I have forks, wheels, 2 drivetrains, a frame, dropper posts, various bars and stems here that all would have been listed quickly on the old classifieds but I never seem to get round to it withe the new system...

Would using the survey function not be a bad idea?
To potentially establish users current thoughts?
(I'll get my coat and wind my neck right back in now, can't be easy running a magazine/web interface viably)

I tend to pop most of my spare parts on eBay these days. Never had much joy with classifieds on here - stuff drops down too quickly and the search function isn’t very good.

Some bigger stuff can go on Facebook classifieds, but more specialised mtb stuff doesn’t seem to go that well I find.

I've had some good deals at bike jumbles, but decent 9 speed stuff is growing scarce. Probably benefitted from people upgrading to different gearing and wheel sizes over the last few years.

Here used to be the best place to trade, don't use it since the switch, it's awful now.

Facebook sales groups have proven pretty effective recently

Followed by eBay

Followed by gumtree et al.

Not a fan of pinkbike, found the international filters too annoying and inconsistent.

Retrobike is probably best unless you want fashionable stuff. Some sturdy traders there, many of whom are here also, I'm sure.

I seem to remember that it was in order to update an ageing system and to appease the many members who felt that it needed updating, as in the ability to sort posts and upload pics.

Trouble is, the update changed everything and seems to have broken the general feel and usability of the site which was what made it fun. The new version is way more functional, but in a very 'soulless' manner.

Also, they chose to cut out a seemingly significant portion of users with their Adblock blocker.

It would not be hard to replicate the old forum layout on the new system but with the additional features.

There was some comment along the lines of that the new forum made more money in 15 minutes than the old one had in 15 years (I.e. some rather than none). So there's obviously a good reason for the new one right there.

It does make it impossible to casually keep an eye on and pick up a bargain or just some obscure spares though.

Why don’t we just create a new forum post on here for buy/sell and use that for the time being?

At the same time we can create a poll as per @Wally and show STW that we’d like the old forum approach.

If monetisation is the main issue, I’d happily bung STW £15 annually, just to have the old buy and sell opportunities. I’m sure a bunch of others would be willing to do the same.

Clearly I have my ‘mass protest/power to the people’ hat on, but if we don’t ask we don’t get.

This has been done several times, to the point I have had warnings about posting about it. STW need ways to raise funds, not helped by fact most people moaning here are freeloaders and not subscribers! Can I recommend you all
Who want the old classifieds back joining STW. It is actually worth it. You are right though, the new classifieds is rubbish. But there is no way they are going to change back now IMO, not least because it would be admitting defeat. It’s a crying shame as the old classifieds was a great USP of this website. I have tried and tried with the new system, it just doesn’t work in terms of actually selling stuff and is too Much faff to list little bits and bobs.
