Is it possible to use another Cane Creek race or another make?
Standard steerer? I've probably got a spare somewhere, I'll try and remember to have a dig tonight. CC are pretty interchangable though not completely- Hope also fit an S8 though the seal might not be quite right.
I've used Hope ones several times without issue. Also the lower S model races fit.
Might be worth a call to Extra direct to find out what is interchangeable. Do Crown races not come with the headset?
You'd think someone would have asked this already and stw would have provided the answer in some detail.

Or you could consider he's bought a second hand frame with a headset fitted and the buyer hasn't sent it to him.
