I'm going to have a go at making my own custom helmet pads. I can't seem to find the material that grips the spiky velcro. Anyone know what I can use? The nearest stuff I've got is the covering to camping pillows. I keep wandering around material shops with a bit of Velcro in my hand, trying to stick it to fabrics.

Self adhesive hook and loop. Make your pads and stick away!

Seriously though could you not sew on a nice material to it, doesn't have to be the full pad shape, just where it grips in the helmet.
The original pad material is a 'loopy' brushed nylon that sticks to male velcro. I'm trying to invent a helmet pad that helps with sweat transmission/evaporation. So I want a more porous pad. We sweat to lose heat by convection. If the sweat just soaks into a sponge, we don't lose heat. And when the sponge reaches 'full' - what happens?
I use this stuff - the foam based self adhesive draught excluder, works really well.

lasts way longer than normal helmet pads, easy to apply, doesn't soak up as much sweat either.

It wicks into the buff I'm wearing on my bonce and the bit of the buff that's hanging down the back of my neck helps that wick into the atmosphere.
