Campbell, from Little Horkesley, Essex, was pulled along the two-mile track by the powerful Porsche Cayenne, then released so he went through the timing gate under his own power.

Meh.

Is this the next thing the idle folks who have e-bikes are going to jump on?

Fair play, this is the method this particular record allows, it’s as much an engineering feat as a cycling one. Similar to what Guy Martin did (although his lead vehicle was way cooler!)

Might as well have been on roller blades.

At least when guy Martin did his record
although drafting he got up to speed under his own power.*

Surely all that's needed here is a faster car 🙂

*Edit. Guy was released at 50mph due to the gearing on his bike. He then pulled up to 112 under his power.

I know that, in theory, it shouldn't really be any scarier than riding a motorbike at those speeds, but I feel terrified just thinking about it. Kinda like, in theory, riding a DH bike down the side of a volcano doesn't really require massive skill, just aiming for daylight and staying off the brakes, but still...

You can sneer because it's not 'real riding' but who cares? It's an existing record with rules, why not have a go for a bit of fun?

Surely all that’s needed here is a faster car

I think getting the car to go that fast with a huge thing on the back like that must've been more difficult than the cycling!

So go into a prone position and reduce the requirement for having such a big aero shield

The bike used is truly incredible. I've seen it and tried to turn the cranks (Moss Cycles is in my village) but there is no way anyone would be able to get it moving under their own steam.
IIRC it has a 504" gearing (or did when I saw it) and it was like the brakes were locked on when trying to turn them.

My understanding this is just the first part of their record breaking attempts - I have a photo somewhere of the same bike with a parachute fitted to the back which they were due to test a couple of months ago so they could go for the really big one.

(I don't think you've shared the pic publickly)

Trail_rat would just use the red thing at the back and omit the bike, obvs 🙂

It's certainly long enough to be a Sick! product but nowhere near slack enough.

Might as well have been on roller blades.

As in, doing 176mph on either (even if you're just coasting down) would be ****** terrifying and you'd need balls of steel to attempt it?
