Do you leave space for a 10mm spacer on top of stem? Or **** it and cut it right how you want it?

You don't have to leave any space for a spacer. However, a short steerer can affect how re-sellable the fork is 🙂

I'm a frame-shuffler so yep, I leave some extra.

I've got a custom frame so cut my forks with no spacers above or below.

If its a new build, you'll know if its right after a test ride. I wouldn't cut it down fully yet.

If its a carbon steerer a lot of them will be void for warranty unless run with a spacer above the stem. It makes surer the stem is clamping the steerer properly.

Tis carbon and never knew that. And am paranoid about my forks failing on some descent.

But the spacer on top does look crap.

See rule 45:

A maximum stack height of 2cm is allowed below the stem and a single 5mm spacer must always – always – be stacked above. A “slammed down” stack height is preferable; meaning that the stem is positioned directly on the top race of the headset.
