Saw something over the weekend that suggested using a non-sieze grease on bb, seat posts, etc. But also seen people use just normal grease on those components.
Are there specific parts that require different treatment?
And when to use Loctite? On rotor bolts to stop them coming loose? Or do you use Copaslip to stop them seizing up?
from memory loctite is supposed to do the job of both anti seize and replace the old school washer locking nut etc (mechanical means)
Blue Loctite on rotor bolts and caliper bolts. Where you don't want them to undo
Copperslip on bolts where there are a differing of materials - steel bolts and alu stem etc. So stems chainring bolts brake lever bolts etc.
Grease on bb threads pedal threads, cranks axles and hub axles.
On seatposts use carbon paste.
That's my general rule of thumb
Grease on moving stuff, bearings etc. Copaslip on stuff you might remove, seat post bb, etc. Loctite on stuff you don't tend to touch much, rotor bolts etc.
I'm probably wrong though, my bikes are always falling apart. 😀
I'd go with hippys advice. Copper grease isn't really grease - its an anti seize compound.
Hippy's got it. Loctite tends to be used in applications where the fixing is going to be exposed to vibration or heat/cooling cycles, like brakes disk screws, which may, over time, act to loosen the bolt.
As others have said grease for lubrication of areas that you can't or don't get into very often, so BB's and hubs for example, or areas that might not be fully sealed as grease wont be so readily washed out. For bikes normal grease also acts as a perfectly good anti-sieze compound if you haven't got copperslip, but like Copperslip, should be used very sparingly so as not to reduce the thread friction too much and help slacken off the bolt.
Copperslip just makes a mess off stuff ime. I wouldnt use it on bicycle parts.
