You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
I changed my partners brakes from Avid Juicys to Hope mono4 (the older black and gold). The new brake wails like a banshee and you can feel the vibrations through the frame. It turns out the top mount is miles out of alignment. Looking at it from the rear, the bottom edge slopes towards the wheel. From above, the front edge slopes away from the wheel. Both are fairly dramatic as they can be seen without the use of a straight edge.
If you use a post mount caliper and its bracket the brake works fine because it can't flex due to the lower mount. Both the Avid and my Tech M4 work fine.
The mount has been faced, but there is too much material surrounding the mount to face fully - the tool just takes out the centre bit. The importer isn't exactly keen as they see it as a deviation from original spec and it works with other brakes.
Your thoughts? I guess this is more of just a rant on my behalf to let off some steam. 😐
new bike? the is mount should be in the right place. Sale of goods act rights
2yr old. The post mount bracket meant the problem didn't occur until it was fitted with an IS caliper. My thought is that if it is an IS mount, but can't take an IS caliper, then it it isn't correctly manufactured.
At two years old you will not get a full refund under SOGA as you have had two years use from it.
I don't want a refund, just would like the damn thing to work 😆
You should be able to get the mounts faced fairy easily by a good bike shop.
Biketreks in Ambleside already tried. There's too much material around the mount.
tried these??....

Why not face the mount and then shim it out from the surrounding material, works fine for us.
bighendo - the brake is correctly set up and spins nicely. Its only when the brake is applied and it tries to pull the caliper round
coatesy - Biketreks did face it, then used smaller diameter washers to try and eliminate the excess material, but it didn't work. The brake (the mono4) works fine on other bikes, (its currently on mine, but i want my tech m4 back ) so i know its not this particular caliper.
Ultimately i could just resort to putting the Avids back on it, or throwing money at it and getting some tech m4, but this wouldn't solve the fundamental problem.
Pics might help us understand why this is a problem.
Could you not just file the excess material off and then get it re-faced?
