I did a favour for someone not long back and they know I am currently looking for a new road wheelset.

To repay me they have said they know someone who owns a bike shop and they wOuld be happy to get me some wheels at cost. A very kind offer.

However I have been looking at direct sales carbon Wheelset ~£600-700. Say for example a nice set of Zipps or Campagnolo wheels that would sell for £1,300 how much could they be at cost ? There appears to be a bit of a gulf in price between direct sale wheels and ‘brand wheels’. I think it would be rude to enquire/ask and then they come back saying £100 off which is way more than what I can afford.

Thanks

It’ll vary from brand to brand, but when I got these: https://shop.mavic.com/en-gb/cosmic-pro-carbon-sl-ust-rr1088.html I paid £900 inc vat when I got them at cost

Don’t expect a huge amount of info though, as it’s not something that is often discussed (for obvious reasons) and I can only say as my days of cheap Mavic are very much gone

RRP say 30-50% over cost I would guess. Actual selling prices much less.

You light get better warranty back up.

I'd guess with most products you'd be looking at anywhere between 20-40%.

Depends very much how low they're going on the price though.

I used to get a cost deals direct from a US manufacturer. I’d get it cheaper than the UK shops distributing the products could purchase it for.
It’s impossible to say what deal the shop gets as they will likely go via a UK distributor, but mine varied between 30 to 50%. I did get a £2k set of wheels for £750 once, but that was a one off. Clothing was the item we got very cheap so guessing there is a bigger mark up on those.

It massively depends on what wheels they are and if the wheels you’re looking at are already reduced online, some retailers sell components for less than the shop cost so in that case the reduced priced shop ones might even be dearer than the reduced ones elsewhere.

I have the luxury of cost deals still and some stuff is 50% of retail plus VAT and others 20-30% off plus VAT.

Mavic always did great deals for bike shop staff.... I suppose they saw us as influencers in our bright yellow shoes😉

So it’s been investigated and as has been said above, if it were against rrp then he could potentially have got some discount, but the wheels I was looking at he simply couldn’t match what is out there already.

I think if you are making a purchase even under these word circumstances if it being favor you have to know what you'll pay for what product. As you say the price could vary by hundreds. So I think you need to get in touch and ask what you'll pay for a couple of products
