I ride a Soul with 120mm forks. I need a new set of wheels, just rims and spokes. I reckon that I can stretch to £200. Has anyone got any recommendations?

You'll find that building wheels onto your existing hubs costs almost as much as buying a set of wheels with hubs. I was in a similar situ a while back. I bought some Superstar Evo hubs on Stans Flow rims for £220. The rims alone would be about £60 each!

Have a look at what Merlin have on offer

something like Mavic 719 or Stans Arch on XT hubs should come in on budget

CRC sells packs of plain gauge spokes/brass nipples for £12 a wheel, right?

60+60+12+12=£144.

I will admit the jump from what I used to pay for D521's (£30 down to £20) to the new model matching it (£50!!) is a worrying sign.

I was assuming the OP would require someone to build them as well. Yes, if built yourself it will be cheaper than buying prebuilt with hubs, but still for an extra £50 or so, you'll have a 2nd set of wheels (depending on how bad the old ones are).

Arch EX would be a good choice. Tough and light.
