I'm looking to shed a bit of weight on the bike and a new wheelset is in order. They'll only be used for racing, Enduros, marathons and XC not for hammering trial centre rock gardens when the current wheelset will go back on. (Hope Pro11 with Mavic 819s been very strong!)
I've done my research and the Stans ZTR Olympic Rims look the way forward. Matched to Hope Pro11hubs again because weight for weight they're the same as Chris King ISO hubs and cost loads less. to get any lighter means XTR (centrelock only so no thanks) or DT swiss 240 which break the bank! DT swiss revolution spokes and alloy nipples give you a wheelset at 1477g for £380! Knocks the socks off of SLRs at £750!or DT Swiss 1450 at £800.
Anyway my concern is, apart from the fact they're going to be race wheels for a 5inch travel Orange 5 ( 😆 I'll laugh for you all! 😆 )
Will this combo withstand my weight of nearly 14st? Or should I just take the pain and learn to pedal up hills!
Also has anyone had good/bad experience of Freeborn or JustRidingAlong for their wheel builds?
iirc the weight limit on a set of olympic rims is 12 stone. i got rid of mine as at 13 stone (built with revs on dt240s) i could feel (and sometimes see ) them flex ;-(
I've got no bling kit so can't talk from experience, but sooner or later in a thread like this someone will mention Spesh Roval wheels, usually the Traversee
shaved down to buggery thin rims. I fyou going to run anything more than 1.9 tyres your not looking at the right product.
and even things like DT 4.2s have a 14 stone weight limit...
oh and remember your weight is to include riding gear , bladder etc 😉
on the plus side ive had jon at jra build up two pairs of wheels and both were spot on
Just had a look at these and they look superb value! Specialized Roval Controle XC Race 1450ish g can find a weight limit on them though?
I ride olympics and weigh 12 stone. I do trail centres and jumps/drops etc and am generally light on kit. Theyve been fine for 3 years. I only used revs on the front. I'd avoid alloy nipples particularly on rims without ferrules, they seize up and round off too easily.
Dunno if that helps. You could just go for 717s or a heavier stans rim. I used 2.4 tyres on mine btw, pumped up hard
I ride the same as you at present and have some olympics / DT 240's on order so feedback is useful but at only 68 kg it will be my clumsy riding that knackers them not my body weight.
Decisions decisions! Spoke to JRA and they didn't seem to think weight was a problem on the Olympic rims so that solves that one. But then spoke to Roger Musson Wheelpro who again didn't seem to think weight was a problem and can supply Hope Pro11 with ZTR 355 rims from hope but checked over by him for £285 a Pair that seems a bargain for a wheelset that should weigh 1550g? a 400g saving over my Pro11 and XM819.
That weight saved is in the most important place, the rim isn't it?
i'd go for brass nipples if i were you
id go for the 355 set for sure mate. And yes rim is best place to lose weight. Run it tubeless with a nice non tubeless tyre too saves weight over ust tyre and feels great too 🙂 enjoy
Decision made, order placed. Pro3 hubs with the 3bolt disc thingy, supercomp spokes, ztr355 rims. Only 24 spoke so we'll see how they hold up! Fettled by Roger Musson Wheelpro.
What are the weight of those coopersport?
Hope say Front: 794g Rear 915g with discs! That's for the XR4.2d rim. So knock appprox 50g per wheel for the ZTR355. should give combined weight of 1609g. Guess for realtime comparison knock approx 150g(Hope 160mm Floating 75g each) off for a pair of discs.
So a sub 1500g wheelset I hope, i'll put them on the scales when they arrive next week.
Wheels arrived 2day and I chucked them on the scales out of interest.
Front 684g Rear 818g with the 3 Bolt discs that come in at 35g each. So 1502g all in that includes the Stans yellow tape and the 5g valves.
Gorrick 100 on Sunday to see what the pro 3s will take!
cool sounds good. think i'll be getting a set
