I ordered a new bottom bracket and a 12spd quicklink from Merlin yesterday and it came to about £28.50, and free postage kicked in at £30 (it was £2.99 otherwise).

Now, in the olden days I'd have bought an inner tube, or a quick link (because they used to cost a quid...) or something to make up the difference, but I had a total mind blank, couldn't think of anything I particularly needed, so after about 10 minutes of fannying about on the site I just coughed up the £2.99.

So I have ideas in future, what's the couple of quid stuff that you get to get you over the free postage line?

Gear cables, brake pads, gels, whatever looks a bargain when I sort by biggest discount or lowest price.

I just buy several sizes and then return the ones that don't fit. That normally gets the order into the bracket for free postage.

'Consumables' so Sprots foody/drinky stuff, lube, maybe some bikewash type stuff. Or socks.

The kind of things I'd never go and specifically set out to buy, but do actually always need.

Headset Spacers. I think they're the bike equivalent of the 10mm socket in car mechanics terms in that the moment they're put down they either change size, location or just disappear completely and you can never find enough/the right one again.

Stainless gear cable

Brake housing (good for dropper posts)

Have a look at the tools section.

Any grease, lube or oil

Small Hope parts

Magnetic parts tray

Best one ever was a DVO travel indicator o-ring. It was green and the wife likes colour matched stuff on the bike.

Ironically, I've got a drawer full of unused sexy tiger stripe man pouch thongs when all I really wanted was small vibrating objects and clothing items that are more air than material

Self adhesive (Park) puncture repair patches.
Tubeless repair kit
Tyre sealant
Lube
Tubeless rim tape
Grips

Or any other consumables

I actually have a list of non urgent bike bits to buy on my phone. Just look at this.

Gear cable inner and outers are a good one.
As are hydraulic brake olives.

Bar end plugs the last time.

Buying CDs was similar. They would often cost £9.99 but free postage would start at a tenner.

This is why when I actually need stainless gear cable inner there's none in stock 😤

No bike related, but I just ordered some crockery from John Lewis that came out to be £2.50 short of being free delivery to the nearest Waitrose. Socks was the answer.

Tyre sealant

Yeah, in hindsight, this would have been an idea

Lube - as in small sachets of arse lard for long days in the saddle, could probably be used for dry chains as well

I guess that answer might work for the LoveHoneys too

I usually go with socks. Water bottles are always needed in our house, the amount the kids lose at school, so they can be good as well.

CRC have great prices in Shimano RT66 rotors, I wanted one 180mm for £6.99 and then added two 203mm rotors at £19.98 for a mate.

There was definitely a thread about this a couple of months ago, of course it's impossible to find it.

Why are they environmental hand grenades? You do realise that the CO2 is captured from fertiliser production and would otherwise go directly to the atmosphere anyway? - just like the CO2 from a few pints of beer.

I normally first ask mates if they need to order anything and sometimes one of them will say something to round me up. Otherwise latest one was some birzman rotor spacers that will set the correct distance without me squinting. I may never use them but I love tools so who cares!

You could have added anything around £2 thrown it away and still been better off. Little Hope bits are usually my go to.

all the above,

on crc/wiggle/merlin/tredz i've not paid postage ever. click on accessories and sort low-high..

tools/allen keys/lubes always good.

ps on merlin check your account points, £5 off £75 spend, so i tend to buy a spare tyre to hit the spend..

Brake cables, for some reason the two bikes that still run cable brakes (one V one drum) seem to eat cables way faster than the fancy bike's gears.

Hose shortening kits.

Grip and bar tape (I have sandpaper hands, corrosive sweat and must 'throttle' the bars a lot) so tend to get whatever happens to be cheap in awful colors and just accept that it only lasts a short while.
