Looks like a straight piece of coat hanger, with a hook either end to go through the links - keeps the chain tensioned when trying to join/separate it
Could probably make one out of a coat hanger tbf, but....
Called a "bike Chain Hook" on ebay. I can't open ebay here to provide link (link geddit) though

I believe it's called 'an old spoke'.
Some (Topeak) multi tools come with one.
Topeaks chain wear tool has one built in, so at least you get two tools out of it.
Ooh I have one of those! Very useful. It's called "a bent bit of coat hanger".

Alternatively leave the chain off the chainrings while you join/separate it. No tool needed.

Or use the cage lock if it's a recent SRAM mech.
I think I still have a plastic one which combined with a tyre lever and snapped around a seat post for carrying. It came on the front of one of the mags more than a couple of decades ago.
I'd post a picture but, you know, STW.

You know, in 40+ years of maintaining my own bikes, I'd never thought of that 😉
Birzman do a chain wear indicator thing which has the hooks for doing this included also, less than a tenner
