I’ve purchased an Orange Alpine 160 for my 11 year old son and the bike has come with a Fox Coil DHX3 rear shock with a spring 450lb x 2.8. I’ve put my sons weight info into a couple a spring calculators and the suggested spring rate is 150-200lb, are these soft springs made? I’ve Google searched and checked out classifieds here and Pinkbike together with eBay and companies like TF Tuned but can’t see any for sale anywhere.

Does anyone have any suggestions of help or would the consensus be that an air can may be more suitable?

You can get a kage spring in 200lb. It will probably fit, maybe not quite as neatly as a proper spring, I think the inner diameter is a couple of mill off. But overall, probably get an air shock, he will be piling on pounds over the next few 6years

I'd go for air. Much more scope to tune it. You should be able to sell the current shock and come out pretty even.

Spring available below in 200.

As above though, switch to air if you can, the thing with 11 year olds is they tend to grow, and you don't want to
be buying a new spring every six months for the kid.

On the other hand, he'll thank you for having a decent shock. At his current weight stiction could be an issue with an air shock.
