I've currently got a 125mm reverb but it's a tad tired and I fancy a bigger drop. It looks like there are a lot more options these days. Is there a current 'best'?
(150mm drop, stealth routing, 31.6)
Very pleased with my One-Up.
The One-Up does look good, but I'd go for a Brand X, my Pro (which is a rebranded Brand X with a silly saddle mount) has proven to be completely reliable, childs play to service and easy to fit / use. I wouldn't spend any more.
Brand X
When a Brand X costs pretty much what the others do to service, it's a no brainer. It's not a performance item like a shock, just needs to go up & down reliably, which it does. 2 year warranty too. Standard levers a bit flimsy, you can swap it out for a Bontrager Drop Line one & with some minor modding it'll also give you the cable clamping at the lever end, not the post. Shimano Pro Koryak for spares. Easy to diy service.
Brand-X are 25% off on Ubyk.co.uk btw. (Not for OP though, sorry. 170/120mm only 🙂 )
I still like my Reverb stealth with x1 remote.
Had a brand x xl for a year and had no issues. I'd buy another without hesitation.
I have Reverbs on two bikes, they've been faultless so far (18 months). Put a Brand X on a hack bike, basically on the assumption that it's cheap enough to just replace instead of servicing. Had two rides on the Brand X, the Reverb levers are nicer, but otherwise can't distinguish between them when riding.
X fusion manic. Beats my old reverb in every way.
Fox Transfer...they seemed to get the best reviews in terms of reliability when I was looking to buy. Have had 2 for a year and no issues.
Of course everyone on here who's dropper hasn't broken will probably recommend there own brand. You might end up with a lot of options 🙂
I've got a Brand-X on the hardtail and Reverb on the FS. I've had two other Reverbs in the past and to be fair they've all been utterly reliable. As stated above the Brand-X lever doesn't feel as robust as others but that's easily addressed. IIRC I paid £89 from CRC with the view that it's probably too good to be true - at the time it was as cheap as a reverb service.
Having had it 12 months, I would buy a Brand-X again if I needed a new post.
Bike Yoke revive, being able to refresh it in about 10 seconds without even taking it out of the bike is genius, you can also do a proper full service at home if needed.
The 185 mm version is a thing of beauty, love it!
Have had 2 reverbs, have a brand X and an E-thirteen.
Would never go back to reverb, the squish/sag when they get old and tired and need a service is enraging to me.
The e-thirteens mechanical stop means it feels great to pedal on and the intermediate positions are actually usable which I can never manage on an infinite adjust post; but it is loud and comes up quickly (non-adjustable speed)
for 1/3 the price, the brand X has a lovely smooth feel, no rotational play and is just nice (although when used to the e-13 it is slow to return)
However the lever (assuming its still the bar button, not shifter lever style) is shocking and in my case literally did not work - couldn't clamp the cable hard enough to pull.
Had two rides on the Brand X, the Reverb levers are nicer,
is about the worst insult you could give to any user control

Unless they have the 1x lever which is infinitely better than the plunger and much nicer than the Brand X lever.

I'm assuming you've never used a GravityDropper. To be fair, when they came out, they were a game changer and they are simple and reliable, but the levers look like they've been subcontracted out to a special needs workshop.
Good stuff, thanks
So...
Brand X is cheap and works but the lever is poor, but you can swap this for a decent one.
OneUp is pretty good too, and has a decent lever but needs to be setup properly as the cable clamps at the lever end, so the cable outer needs to be routed smoothly.
Reverbs are also okay but can go spongy, wobbly and the plunger lever isn't very good.
Revive is good but quite a bit more cash
When a Reverb goes wrong, it's pretty dire. Safe to say i'd only get another if it came fitted with a new bike.
In my experience, the One Up has been one of the more simple to fit and the most reliable. That is, for the time being; it's a dropper, so something's going to happen one day. I've had it since May, so it's already outlived the last reverb by a month.
I can't really fault my Reverbs -current 170mm jobbie has been fine for a year with no love. Which is pretty much the same as my previous 125 and 150 versions.
+1 for brand x, I've had 3 all with no issues.
I don't get how the 'big brands' can make such unreliable posts in comparison (reverb, Thomson, ks, Xfusion - I broken them all). Whatever brand x did with the design of there's it's worked.
Even after swapping out the lever for a better one it's still less than 1/2 the cost of most of the others. OK it weighs 100g more, but it works when you want it too.
Another vote for One-Up. Best I have used and fitting is so simple and easy!
I've had a reverb for going on two years and it's been faultless until last month. It needs a service as it's not returning back up and I've been quoted at least £77 but it could be more depending on what's wrong with it.
Just bought an RSP plummet stealth from Merlin for £100 and it is just as good as the reverb.
The remote doesn't look as nice as the reverb but apart from that first impressions are very good.
X fusion manic. Beats my old reverb in every way.
MTBR podcast were raving about the X fusion. The other one they mentioned was the Bike Yoke revive.
I've had one Reverb fail miserably but that was after 3 years of use without a service or bleed. Now on a Magura Vyron V2.. tbh jury is still out.
Depends on how you like to spend money.
There's a lot around that are cheap, almost disposable. Lots with disposable sealed cartridges. I can see why a lot if people go this way.
I prefer to take the hit up front with something that is easier, cheaper and less frequent in terms of servicing. That's why, after ditching Thomson because you can't get in them, I'm about to buy my third Revive (one for each bike, not because I've had to replace any).
I got a brand X a moth back. So far so good and the lever is a standard under the bar job where the front shifter would normally go. All metal no concerns so far.
Until last week I would've said Race Face Turbine but mine's just broken. Put the faithful A1 reverb back on as a spare until I get a warranty replacement.
As other have said - Brand X with a 2year warranty (plus maybe a Wolftooth lever) seems a no-brainer
