[Closed] whats the difference between a short' medium & long cage rear derailleur?

hi everyone. I smashed my rear meck last week and went to order a new one of crc & thought i would check before i buy what the differences is. thanks.

The longer the cage, the greater the gear range pretty much sums it up IMO. So if you're running a 9 speed with triple chainset, go for the long cage and, conversely, if you're running 1x9 go for a short cage. I'm running 2x9 and I'm using a medium cage but it also worked fine with a triple chainset.

I always use medium on my triple setup the long ones are to long and drag on the ground when in ruts.

I went for a medium cage cos it was cheapest! Probably got to be a bit more careful at the extremes of gear selection but as Baznav says, better clearance in ruts.

I thought proper "short" was only road mechs (for shimano at least) ?
