Currently have Hope Hoops with Crest rims and feel like I could do with something a fair bit wider now that I have 2.35 tyres, hoping for minimum 25mm internal but preferably 28 or so. Thought some WTB rims might do, not sure of the models they do, or possibly Flow EX? Or is it not worth the build costs and change the whole wheelset? Ta
25mm isn't really wide in these days of 29 & B+. blunt SL are a nice width but not scary, won't fit your frame wide. Otherwise for normal wide EX is a good if not the full story start
Nice article in the latest mag on new age wide rims
If you sell the Hopes and add a bit of cash you could get some superstar wide wheels for less than rims, spokes and a build on your existing hubs I expect.
If you can build yourself and find some wider rims with the same ERD as your existing rims so you can reuse spokes the balance might change, though.
Thanks- any ideas on which Superstar wheels? I did have a look recently but couldn't work out what was what at the time.
Selling your existing wheels and buying some Hope Hoops with Flows probably not much price different to buying rims and spokes and paying for the build.
Buy LightBicycle 35mm carbon rims, get them laced to your hubs. #winning.

If you want wider rims, go for it, but don't think that running 2.35 tyres on 21mm rims is an issue.

It is pretty crap though, you have to run fair bit higher pressures to stop them deforming.
Definitely worth getting them rebuilt I'd have thought. Ryde Trace Trail (25mm) or Enduro (29mm), Pacenti DL31 (25mm) or WTB would be my recommendations. Say £70 per rim and £40 for spokes/build, you might pay £220 or so and could then sell your Crest rims to recoup some of that.
You'd end up with a hand-built wheelset - nice.
I'm running 2.3 tyres on 19 mm rims. 30psi front and back. No issues whatsoever.
Plus 1. I'm running 2.3 tyres on 21 mm carbon rims. 20psi front and back. No issues whatsoever.
Will you really notice the 'huge' difference for the cost of the rebuild/new wheels?
Wtb scrapers too wide?
Have a look at the Superstar Tech 4 wheelset, DS25 rims.
Very comparable to a Flow EX or similar. Spot on for tyres that width.
I've run 2.5 tyres on 19mm rims but the tyre does pinch in at the bottom and you do end up running higher pressures to avoid pinching and tyre roll.
I've gone to 23mm width and dropped the max width I run to 2.35 and the profile is noticeably squarer and I've come down to 25psi instead of my previous 30psi.
When I get my full suss built up this summer I'll probably go for either Ryde Trace Enduro at 29mm wide or those carbon Light Bicycle ones at 35mm (or whatever they are!)....you can go too far, Bike Radar put their favourite tyres on a wide rim and were shocked by the square profile, the increased drag and the reluctance to lean into corners.

Really? £220 for re-using hubs, when £50 more will get you new wheels. Can't see you'll get much money selling second hand Crests.
Bought a fresh set of Flows on Hope evos for £300 not very long ago, from Merlin I think. Also what size you after I have some 29" for sale.
Oh and believe the hype, I went for AM classic wide lightening, love em 😉

I might be wrong but I don't think it'll get you new hand-built wheels on Hope or similar hubs. Superstar or something similar is one option; having someone rebuild onto new rims using existing (presumably perfectly OK) hubs is another. Horse for courses or something!
Thanks for all the suggestions, I'll have a look at those. I do find that the Hans Dampfs that I have feel like they're rolling a bit in the corners, but maybe I'm being fussy. Don't want to spend loads to do any change so will have a careful think. Wheels are 26. Cheers all
Got some white Syncros DP25 rims and all the spokes to lace to Hope Pro2 hubs for not a lot of money. Taken of mine to put LB carbons on
I would buy these http://www.merlincycles.com/stans-notubes-ztr-flow-rims-white-29er-pair-74867.html
Do all the donkey of swapping over yourself and then take to local bike shop for a true up.
Thought he was after 26"
Buy a fatbike! 🙂
