Not a brilliant location for riding. I would either do Dalby, or maybe head to Ladybower and do a non trail centre ride - loads of routes available around there.

Only other option is Sherwood, but it is OK, rather than good or excellent.

Would recommend Dalby combined with a blast on north York moors, but neither is easy to get to from Sunny Scunny. Stainburn is brilliant but it's a long way and would not keep you entertained for a day.

Why drive nearly 2 hours each way (and presumably have to cross Humber bridge) and pay £7 or whatever it is now on the forest drive to do 2 laps of a trail centre when you could so a proper ride in peaks only 45 minutes away?
Use the saved travelling time for a longer ride. In 5 hrs from scummy you could do an pretty long and decent route around hope/ladybower, just search Internet for routes, the trails are so well trodden it's pretty hard to get lost anyway

Gotta be Market Rasen! Don't know much about it, I'm from Donny, but it's been mentioned on here a few times.

Edit: members only for now, not for casual visit for now, but interesting to know it's happening anyway. Head for Dalby.
45 minutes to the peaks from Scunny? If he's got his helicopter he might as well go all the way over to the lakes!

wharncliffe is not too far,i could blow the dust off my full face and do some downhilling, though i am supposed to be retired from that sort of riding 😆
does anyone know if the offical xc trails are open there yet?
does anyone know if the DH run are super gnarly or are they fun on short travel bikes aswell.

I'm with Iain, 2hrs driving each way, £3.50 each way on the bridge and £7 at Dalby... do a bit of homework and go across to the Peak and do a classic there...

I'd agree with that. But as you asked about trail centres I'd still say stainburn. But then I like techy stuff.

The wharncliffe xc trails are sadly on the slide by the last account I heard, downhill stuff is still ace though

M180, M18 and straight around sheff ring road
Hit it right time on a morning and will get no traffic, would be an hour max
Against torturous single carriageway caravan clogged roads to Pickering via hull and York?
Know which one I'd be doing, lakes is 3-4x further so now your just being silly besides everyone knows peaks (the peak for locals) is better than lakes 😉

Go to the peak district from there. Quick blast along the motorway and you are there. Dally is a slow drive. As for Market rasen, it is not really a trail centre, more a small locals playground I would say- a few mini DH routes and some jumps. I have to be honest though and say I don't like my wheels off the ground though, but for a day then Peak District has to be your best option, or bring the hardtail and an OS map and head into the Lincolnshire wolds- even shorter drive.

I did this a lot growing up, and now when I go home and visit my parents. TBH I'd only consider Dalby as part of a multi-day trip to the North York moors - if your staying in Sunny then some of the best riding in the country is only a 1 hour 20 min drive away in the Peaks. Do a loop around Ladybower - straightforward to drive to and not difficult to navigate around.

As the name suggests, i'm from/living in S****horpe.

45 minutes to the peaks is optimpistic, i got to Cut Gate last Sunday in an hour. You could easily get to Wharncliffe in 45 minutes though.

Other than that theres not a great deal. I've not been to Lee Quarry, but as it's quite close to Leeds i wouldn't imagine you'd be driving for more than 1:30hr max.

Market Rasen is members only, but from what i've heard it's not worth the trip. I only live 30mins away and i've never bothered. A wall ride, some planks of wood and some flat 'downhill', no ta.

You could get a days riding round here but you'd have to know where you were going and 50% of it would be road.

In short, i drive out to the Peaks every week. I've not found anything else worth driving to in under 2 hours.

I'm going to disagree and say Dalby. I love it up there and the WC XC stuff is an excellent addition. The roads between Scunny and Pickering shouldn't be too bad as you can cut cross country to Malton I think and the caravaners will be on the A64.

For purely turning up, riding around a nice purpose built trail without any need for navigation, with a decent cafe at the end, Dalby is good I think.

I admit though, the Peaks would be a good option and sub 2 hours will get you to Langsett for a Cut Gate loop incl. a loop down to the Snake Pass bridge over the reservoir.

I'd give Wharncliffe a miss.

scunny, Lee Quarry isn't 'near Leeds'! Takes me about 30/40 minutes to get there and I'm in Halifax!

If you're of the right mindset Stainburn can entertain for several hours or even a short "day", IMO. Bear in mind I;ve been building there for donkeys so am not bias free but have seen and talked to umpteen people, both lovers and haters mind 😉

Pook's videos are great and there also a spectacular one by the guys at Pro Ride Guides (check out their site) demonstrating that flow is 95% about the rider and 5% the trail (figures have been made up but you get my drift ;-))

There's trails to be had exploring in the Norwood side (check out the SingletrAction site for a rough map) and the Boulder Trail / Descent Line stuff is signposted. There's a little NS, skinnys/balance logs and rocks. Lots and lots of rocks.

There's no facilities except trails and a car park but Otley is only a short drive away and has everything you could need, plus Chevin Cycles bike shop. There's also the Sun Inn down the road which does a good pint and "hearty" food.

The SingletrAction site and forum there are best if you want specific advice, a potential guide etc.

I like Dalby too but it's an entirely different thing, much more like a "proper" trail centre. Gisburn would also be fun but, like Lee Quarry I'd imagine it's too much of a drive.

I live in Sheffield and used to commute from crookesmoor to scunny daily. 55minutes each way.
So wharncliffe or hope valley is certainly within 2 hours. There's plenty to do.
How about cut gate?
M180 M18 M1 to J35a A616 stocksbridge bypass to langsett.
56 miles & 64 minutes according to google maps.
You can then do cut gate plus as much or as little round derwent as you have time for.
I would take that over dalby any day of the week

Havn't ridden Stainburn so can't include that in my opinion, but I can agree with above suggestions: Wharny or Cut Gate. Neither are trail centres but (or rather 'so') the riding is great.

Either or really, not much in the journey times - parking spots for either are only 5 minutes drive from one another. Take an OS map if you do Cut Gate & Derwent, take a local if you do Wharncliffe.

The wharncliffe xc trails are sadly on the slide by the last account I heard, downhill stuff is still ace though

Was there this a.m. Still loads to go at, although granted mostly pretty hard to find for none regulars like the OP.

SingletrAction worked at / with FC for a number of years to develop the XC (and DH) trails. After a lot of effort we found the beat forester just wouldn't engage. And if you haven't got the beat forester on side then it's incredibly hard to make any meaningful progress.

The local guys mapped out a route and created it from dirt in most places. We wanted to go fully armoured due to local conditions but (see above) this never happened. Add that to all the sign post vandalism and general instances of anti-social activity in the woods and, eventually and understandably, the local volunteers decided to call it a day.

Incredibly frustrating.

Whatever though, there's still a XC but hard to navigate and not all weather. There might even be STA signs on it (which is a bit laughable really).

Hey ho 😎

He is.

Its a shame because the bits of XC/singletrack-ey type stuff I've ridden in Wharncliffe is good. Seems odd that the DH trails got the makeover they needed (although I was under the impression that there was to be 4 or 5 official descents - when I went at Easter I was amazed at how many different ones there were... more than before!) but the XC was neglected.

Yes, Wharncliffe.

We first got involved on the basis that some safety stuff needed to be done, mostly in relation to the DHs, otherwise there was a risk FC would try and put them all beyond use.

That kind of got done and meantime rough management and development plans were made. These included designated areas, more XC and DH development etc.

But then we hit issues with the beat forester, no clear permisssions or responses coming through form FC etc. After a longtime of trying to make things happen with one hand tied behind out backs and trying to persuade people who wanted to dig the woods to hold off onthe promise of "jam tomorrow" from FC which never materialised it became untenable.

Now folks develop whatever they get away with on the DH side without much sanction or control. I imagine there's a bit of blind-eye-turning and "below the radar" type stuff but sooner or later it'll head up again.

Personally I'm really sad because it is an awesome location for umpteen good reasons.

Sorry to go on and for ht eslight thread-jack 😎

id go for cut gate from langsett.. its riding brilliantly at the moment...

dalbys not bad i guess.. but not a patch on the descent from cut gate to langsett

Stainburns brilliant if you want to play about and session bits of trail (its better with a few people to egg each other on) but a bit short.

and gisburn and lee quarry are probably a bit far
