As title, wanting to convert a vertical dropout hardtail to single speed.
Whats the best & most reliable chain tensioner?
surly/DMR but expensive
On one doofer is good value
My superstar one broke in less than year as the spring snapped.
got a couple of second hand ones for sale if you like? one is a gusset and has a roller for tension and the other is an one-one and has a jockey wheel and is spring loaded but i prefer the gusset one it just seemed to work better! £7 posted for each.
i had the DMR one, but i had to bodge it to fit my frame. However, once it was on the chain was very secure.
I've since put on a spring loaded one with a jockey wheel-esque thing to guide the chain. It's ok, but pretty poor at keep the chain on when coming off a kerb or at high cadence.
ime the rohloff one is the best, and only sprung one i've ever got on with (it was VERY good).
otherwise a non-sprung DMR STS was the best.
ime springs just don't have enough spring in them for SS use.
watch out for the dmr kit some chains don't fit the guide and cassette ring ie: to small
For me its got to be the Paul Components Melvin - unbelievably good bit of kit - unfortunately they cost a small fortune...
Not sure if they have a UK importer at the moment - you sometimes see the odd one on ebay though.
rear mech worked best for me - not the nicest looking but definitely most functional. I've tried the DMR one and it's ok but if you take the back wheel off regularly to get it in the car etc, it gets annoying.
i have a nearly new rohloff one for sale if interested?
