My rigid mtb runs 11sp. Its got an XT shifter and mech. The drive train is getting a little noisy and worn.

I currently have a Sunrace 11-50 11sp HG cassette. I really like the range for laden trips, and spinning when im tired.

Whats the best value or best lasting wide ramge cassette amd chain to replace with? Is it as simple as like for like? Or should i buy something else? Quality and service life is more important to me than cost.

Thanks

Ian

For cost, whatever one is on offer from either sunrace, sram or Shimano at the time that gives the range needed, along with a KMC / Sram chain.

For bling new shiny feelgood, Garbaruk or XX1/X01.

I've got a mix of the above and the Garbaruk always makes me smile just looking at it.

Totally agree with @twonks

Garbaruk for light and fancy, Sunrace again or deore 11-51 for heavier but affordable.

 1. Have a look at zero Friction cycling for hardest wearing chains. Might be worth spending a bit more to get a better pence per mile out if it. Off the top of my head, I think SRAM chains come out as longer lasting but might cost a watt or two.

Merlin have 46t SLX and XT 42t under £60, if you don't mind losing the 50t, I've just dropped my 12sp to 45t as I hardly used the 51t, so far so good, don't miss it.

Money no object, Garbaruk all day.

I have a deore one. Had an XT one and a few sunrace. The deore looks better than the sunrace.

The other thing with Garbaruk is that they are also actually very durable. I usually go through an XT 11-46 cassette and three chains in 12 months here in Wales and roughly 4500-5000 miles with lots of climbing. I've been on a Garbaruk for the last 14 months and covered 8250 miles and two chains (OK I use XO SRAM 11-speed chains so good ones) and the cassette still looks like it has lots of life left. I have another for when it does go that I bought in the Black Friday sales last year, but even though they are a bit spendy, it is rapidly becoming economical 🙂

Definitely the Sunrace for me. Nicer ratios than shimano, you can still replace individual sprockets and obviously most of the SRAM are xd so irrelevant for an hg spline.

I put a deore one on my hardtail earlier this year.

Shifts better than the sunrace it replaced. Think it's a bit heavier, not sure. It was significantly cheaper.

What's all the hype about SunRace kit.

Had a 12speed full kit and it were horrible in every area from shifter to cassette.

Bloody heavy too and fully if fugly thing bothers you.

Microshift kit I run now. 🥳
