You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
I was in the Alps last week and I decided to give the DH bike a rest, so the hardtail got an absolute pasting.
I noticed the fork had gone soft so I pumped it up and rode it. But, it goes flat over night so it's losing air pressure. Also on the last day out it dropped oil from the seals down the back of both legs.
This is a fork I bought used just to get my bike together and I'm not in love with it. It's a Specialised OEM model from a Stumpy Evo with a 20mm axle which was useful but now I want some lighter wheels. I've never serviced it so no idea what's inside it.
I know I can drop the lowers off and do seals and oil but what about the air chamber? Is that some kind of sealed unit? What kind of failure are we looking at?
If I can fix it relatively cheaply DIY style I will. If not, I'm fork shopping.
Unless you've really fubar'ed something, all you need is some o-rings, oil and grease.

So basically you'd like someone to tell you it's knackerated and you need brand new shiny?
Revelation?
A name like that be prepared to be amazed.

Am I evil?
Let's just say that if it's beyond economical repair I won't cry about it. My mate is selling an immaculate 36 Vanilla but I couldn't justify it this time last month.
I understand upgraditis, but I'm having trouble getting a desire for lighter wheels and a 36 Van in the same place... 🙂
Revs are fine when serviced. On longer lengths (150 or so) they are sometimes held to be a bit flexy. Pike RCT3's are a solid upgrade without being too much heavier although your wallet will be about £500 lighter.
I have 140 Revs on my HT and 150 Pikes on my bouncy bike and I'm happy with this. I had 150 Revs with a 20mm on my old bouncy bike and they were fine tbh. The newer bike with the Pikes is better in every way for me so not a fair comparison.

Sorry, it's a Float! I forget the different names. Definitely light in the hand though. Probably noticeably stiffer than my Rev is at 150mm.
Also a new shop in Newcastle has a pair of Mavic Crossride wheel tyre combo things on sale which make my Nukeproof Generators look positively stone age.
I think we can see which way this is going. Rev's in the bin and I'll post some pictures of shiny new bits soon.
well, if you want to bin them I can find a 'bin' for them.
In all seriousness, RS forks are not that complicated. The air side is accessed via a circlip, as is the damping side. Just depends if the stanction is worn or not really, but you'll know that as soon as you take the lowers off.
