Have an alert set up for disc CX wheels, just in case a decent pair come up to save a few quid, and saw these.

The description says:

Just the odd mark from usage including on the spokes around the cassette area, the normal chain rub.

Am I right in thinking there ain't nothing normal about the above pic, and something must be up, rear mech throwing chain into the spokes several times for example, for it to get like that. Especially in <300 miles.

I'd say a poorly aligned mech although that damage could happen from the chain coming off just once. Wouldn't worry me too much as long as they were cheap

You're right.

Now do us a gif of a chain unshipping and blowing up a rear wheel.

I'd say that was likely to be more than once though it is possible if done at speed and it basically stops the bike.

Also, if the chain does go down between the cassette and spokes whilst out riding, the only way to get it out is brute force unless you have a cassette tool!

Could be a CX injury from racing. Slam shifted coupled with loads of mud/crud.

So long as they're straight and cheap'ish they'll be fine.

Surely its a mech issue given they are 130mm spaced wheels and he was using them on a 135mm spaced rear despite them 'working fine'. So they'll be fine if you have a 130mm rear but if not you'll get the same problems. Sounds like a buying blunder trying to recoup cost. Or have I misunderstood how wheel spacing works in this case.

My spokes look like that and have done for a good few years. I can't remember the cause or the occasion that it occurred, I just remember seeing the damage once when I have removed the cassette.
Ridden for a good few years with them like that without issue.

I've ripped through 8 spokes in the past with the chain going over the back of the cassette just once.

And I've ridden for years with spokes in worse condition than that. If they were cheap enough and could take standard spokes they may be worth a punt.

That would be enough to put me off them. There are enough 135mm spaced wheels out there now (says me with a 132.5mm spaced frame 🙂 )

Thing is, the D772SB is a 135mm hub.

Unless I am missing something.

I'm not sure that the wheel spacing would make a jot of difference, and the damage looks minimal.
I'd not pay £250 for them though - even if they've done less than 300 miles, they're CX wheels so could have been put through the grinder.
Maybe £150.

It had to happen sooner or later.

This. Clearly had the chain down the back of the cassette. Not a massive issue, and that damage doesn't look too bad, but it's happened!

Limit stop adjuster fail - set yours better than the original seller when you fit them (you should adjust for every change of wheels). Spokes look in reasonable shape, so the damage wouldn't worry me.
