I had a big crash in the alps last summer whilst wearing a composite fullface helmet. I have had a couple of brain bleeds and been really ill, needing a couole of brain operations.
Now clearly DH riding is out of the question, but i was wondering what is the most protective trail helmet.
I have 2 holes in my skull that are about 10-12mm diameter so i could do with a fairly protective shell, but the brain injusy means i need something that would absorb an impact without passing too much onto my brain.
Ive seen Smith helmets have a sacrificial honeycomb lining inside the eps shell. It seems like it could help but is there any evidence or claims for a really protective helmet.
Does anyone have any recommendations?
Thanks
Ian
I don't know if it's safer but the Bell Super DH has MIPS spherical which is like a helmet within a helmet connected by rubber bands so the outer helmet can rotate a bit. I think they are different types of material for each shell.
I don't know whether the number of vents would be an issue for you? Would something with fewer holes be safer?
I have no idea what will offer the best protection for your particular circumstance but Virginia Tech appear to have tried hard to rate helmets based on the force they pass to the wearer. I try to stick to the better scorers subject to fit, availability, etc
