Wassup Lads and Ladettes,

My girlfriend is a solid 5 foot 4 and we want to try her on a mountain bike to try some long distance XC stuff and some off-road touring (maybe Mongolia or somewhere like that). She rides lots on the road and so we want to try her on something karate monkey esque. (but...with a budget of about £200-250 for the frame)

I've got a set of 29'er wheels knocking about and a few parts in my shed bargain bits bin.

I think a small On-One inbred or similar might be too big for her??? Does anyone have any suggestions?

XS and 29er sounds like a wacky combo.

Dovebiker's 29+
I'm the same height as the OP's girlfriend and I would strongly disagree that an XS 29er doesn't work - this is my custom 29+ that I designed myself - OK, it was designed for a shorter, rigid fork but in all other respects it's 'standard' geometry. It's an absolute hoot to ride.

Yeah but can you buy them. If you can it will be a racey xc bike.

Planet X have a 29er Bootzipper frame (no fork) in small (not XS) for £100 - https://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/FROOBZ29FO/on-one-bootzipper-29er-mountain-bike-frame or £199 with fork - https://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/FTOOBZ29/on-one-bootzipper-29er-mountain-bike-frameset (although it looks like you can pick up the fork for £50 - https://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/FOOOBZ29/on-one-bootzipper-29er-mountain-bike-fork ).

I would say at 5'4" you are more a small.

Mrs_oab is 5' and rides on XS. She's had (26er) Cannondale 12.5", (27.5)Trek 13.5" and now (27.5) Giant XS.

My other half can just ride my bike.

I'm 5'8" and medium bike.

She is 5'5” a small would be perfects. An xs would be rediculous.

My daughter is 5’8 and can ride a large Octane prone
For £200 (190 with code) they’re great value and have size small.

MrsbeanZ is 5'2"ish , rides a small T130 and finds it way better than the xs bikes shes previously had .

I’m just rebuilding my teenage sons 29er into a larger frame I’ll have a 16” frame for sale but that’s probably a small / medium. Although she may have longer legs and a shorter body so who knows!!

Well I'm a smidge over 5'4" and my Commencal Meta is a small, my Bird Aeris is a small. I have long legs for my height 31" inside leg. I've been running short stems 32-50mm on my bikes for the last 14 years to get a decent fit. It's one of the problems of running a high saddle position against your height, keeps you further away from the bars, lucky I have a + ape.

All the MTB's I bought back in the mid 80's were small, even had a frame built for me, in all this time testing a bike before you buy was normally out of the window as most shops only stock medium and large.
