[Closed] What wheels for offsprings bike?

Offspring #2 has signed up for a week long cycling ride via his school. We have a suitable bike, a tiny little Giant roadie. The problem is the rear wheel. Bearing are shot and frankly so is the rim from offspring #1 showing off in the skatepark on the same ride 2 years ago.

So i think I need a new wheel. The gears are Sora, which off the top of my head are 8 speed. Are road wheels the same as MTB in that 8/9/10 all go on the same hub? I am looking to get something cheap but functional as this is really SWMBO once a year bike.
