OK, so I need some new centerlock 700c tubeless wheels for my Gravel / Winter road bike. Nothing posh needed, maybe about £300.
The obvious answer I guess is Hunt, but I'm just wondering if there's any decent alternatives in the same price range STW can recommend?
The Prime ones from CRC are pretty good, nothing fancy but solidly built and lightweight
In similar quandary. Keep looking at DT Swiss G1800. Interested to hear any other suggestions. Superstar selling off some off their stock but have had very mixed results with their wheels before.
I've got a fair few sets of Fulcrums on my CX bikes and the kids cx & Road bikes, from 800db to racing three DB and I'm very impressed, for your budget I'd be getting a set of these Rapid Red 5's they're more than wide enough at 23mm internal for 43mm gravel tyres and are plenty light enough with good hubs too.
I personally run DT CR1600's but those or the GR1600's are at least £430 a pair, totally bomb proof mind
I've just bought a pair of the Superstar disc wheels(arc rims I think), I've been impressed with their V6 hubs on some MTB wheels I have so for 50% off I thought they were good value but I've yet to use them. The only thing is they're not super wide, I get them for road so 19mm was fine for me.
I've got a pair of DT Swiss GR 1600 SPLINE® that have been pretty much faultless. Maybe slightly more than you're willing to pay though, I got them from Germany pre-brexit. I've also got a pair of HUNT 4 Season All-Road, which I used on the road during the winter. They were fine and I'd have happily tried them off road if I didn't already have the DT Swiss ones.
Another thumbs up for DT Swiss GR1600
https://www.merlincycles.com/dt-swiss-ln-gravel-disc-rear-wheel-700c-262050.html is £99
How would the £65 https://www.merlincycles.com/dt-swiss-p-1800-spline-32-stealth-disc-road-wheel-700c-262023.html hold up to be a bargaintastic set for £145 total including £10 loyalty points discount?
Thanks for the suggestions, I should have mentioned that my - very much gen 1 gravel-more-like-hefty-road bike can only take up to 35’s and currently has Terreno 33’s on it.
Is a 25mm internal with with 33mm tyre do able? I guess it is.
Those DT Swiss look good, I am tempted indeed. I’m equally tempted the Merlin seems to have restocked their GRX Merlin Malt, I am tempted to buy one of those as a proper single ring gravel bike with decent tyre width compatibility.
Could Just Riding Along build you something for that sort of money?
I'm coming around to the idea that relatively conventional handbuilt/2x wheels with shallow rims are more comfortable and more resilient than anything factory, especially for gravel (I skelped a rim and dinged it badly enough that I wanted to replace it, easily done).
I've JRA wheels, 25mm internals and 1600g for £400.
They've taken nearly 2k of off-road abuse without the need of any maintenance.
I was looking at pretty much the same criteria 2 weeks ago, £300 budget, gravel/winter road use but also needed adaptability in the hubs as want to be able to switch between 9/10mm QR through axle and 12mm through axles. Went for the Hunt 4 Season All roads, delivery was really quick, pretty much next day, and i'm very happy with them. Would definitely recommend.
Had a set of Hunt 4seasons on my alloy diverge. Really liked them and I am quite hefty! Wish I hadn’t sold them as they would be great on my Freeranger.
My primes have been ok, but but amazing. Not very well sealed etc. My DT Swiss have been much better. Probably about 8000km on each, so a reasonably long amount of riding to be able to compare
Don’t know if you’re after QR or thru axles. If thru axle I’ve been impressed with a set of these with the Kinlin 26RTS but there are other wider rim options listed:
