Hi
I would like to replace my wheel set on my hard tail as I am feed up with cup and cone.

I was looking at hope evo with crests my only worry is I weight 98 kg. What other options do I have? Budget would be 300 ideally. I have looked at the light bikes carbon wheels but would prefer to have a hub I can change axles on.

Any suggestions?

superstar or hope really, both are pretty sturdy, i'd go for arch or flow rims if your concerned about strength though.

myself , being a fellow lardarse would suggest bontragers - dt swiss hubs and no weight limits. you would get a nearly new set of race x lites for less than £200 and running tubeless is embarrassingly easy.

The x lites look a little pricey.

I have flows on another bike, they are great but heavy ish

expensive new I agree - but always turning up on ebay - quite often as new. There was a set of new 2013 race lites (approx 1450 gms ) that went for less than £140 (with tyres) 2 weeks ago. Still kicking myself about not bidding on them 🙁

is it the front or rear hub you wish to change axles on?

I had a secondhand set of crossmax ST's on the frame (if it is the one I think it is). 09 models onwards can have 15mm or QR front axles but can't change from 135 on rear, 12 onwards can have any axle combinations with the new ITS-4 hub. I am 90kg I know people have suggested steering clear of S/H ST's but perhaps I was lucky, the ones I bought off classifieds a couple of years ago have been faultless

I know of two people who have used American Classics, not sure which models, but they have been delighted with them- tough and light.

Heavier than you on crests, with zero issues, can't fault them

For your budget, Crests or Arch EX on Hopes hard to beat.
