Looking for a new waterproof jacket, under £80. Which is waterproof and very breathable.

I got paclite and gore-ptex but not very breathable. Both get sweaty and a lot of moisture inside.

No such thing for mountain biking we create too much heat.

Plus we have to wash them too often so the coating comes off anyways.

I got a berghaus jacket at the moment, which is paclite goretex and I get far too hot in it. It is lightweight, breathable it aint. So whats the answer in the wet wintery months. (Hibernation)...

Could try a simple Windproof, not waterproof but "showerproof" what rain does come in is no worse than the sweat that bulids up in a full waterproof for me. I do tend to be very sweaty however.
So long as you keep moving it's warm, damp/wet but warm, and the windproof aspect means you dont freeze on descents or due to windchill.

No full shell breathes enough for me to wear on a bike without becoming boil in the bag.

I have a few different thickness's of jacket so depending on how cold it is i just go thicker. In winter its my feet & hands that are the issue.

Shimano winter boots just about stop my toes falling off but i've not solved the hand thing yet!

Many hours out on the field in all weathers?

British Army DPM jacket. I have two one new and one Grade1. DPM is unlicensed Goretex. You can buy these for less than £25.

You'll look abit unusual out on the trail? Let the poncy riders ride in their colour matching and cycle-fashion flimsy kit 😉

DPM is unlicensed Goretex.

DPM is 'Disruptive Pattern Material'; could apply to cotton jackets, trousers, t-shirts, etc - another name for 'camouflage'.

Probably something similar to what you have, but with pit zips and chest venting pockets (ie climbers waterproof with big high pockets designed to use while wearing a harness). Way beyond £80 I would imagine, but something like a Paclite with pit zips would let air circulate better.

DPM- stand corrected 🙂

Its bloody lovely. In the past I would NOT bother going out on the ride if it looked like the weather could be foul. I rode every weekend through last winter just knowing I have this jacket on my backpack ready 😀

Not all combat jackets are Goretex. The sellers tend to mention when they are. The non-gore ones can be nikwaxed or similar and made reasonably water proof though.

Anyhow, I have a jacket made of Goretex Paclite, and it's not really great for cycling (not really breathable enough). The best cycling jacket I ever had was a Howies 22 seconds, the key thing being that it wasn't waterproof, and therefore could get rid of your sweat quickly enough.

I'm getting quite tempted by the Montane featherlite - has anyone used one for riding?

Have a look at Marmot's Mica jacket, it's very light and extremely breathable and has an SRP of around £100, so you'll probably find it cheaper on line. Much more breathable than Gore's Paclite imo. Windproof stuff is fine if you're mostly moving fast and running hot, but less great when it really buckets down - it's a classic trade off between protection and breathability. But anyone, non Gore-Tex fabrics have moved on a lot over the last few years and you can find stuff that's very breathable and relatively affordable too.

I was given a £170 NorthFace paclite goretex jacket under warranty - I never really used this partly because I was worried about thorn punctures, wear and tear etc.

Not all combat jackets are Goretex
Aye mine is and properly taped etc. If I fell off/ripped etc I'd treat it as a £25 accident. Either that or just repair with part of the hood etc 😀

Off-road I'd rather have something that I'm not too precious about

Yes. It sizes up large though for onbike use so if unsure go for the smaller size. Skiprat sold me on the idea.

Thing is, you wear a gillet (I wear my trusty old NorthFace one) and if it does rain then you bring out and unroll the jacket. When its bucketing-down no one cares what you look like as they are all heads-down anyway.

Brightly coloured jackets are great for commuting.

Ps. Majority are Grade1- I found an additional one that was brand new though. Must have been nicked from Stores?!!

I wear a Ion jacket and love it. I run hot and find unless its truly bucketing down the water that does get in warms up nicely but i avoid that clammy overheated feeling of a full shell. In winter i tend to carry both as at 150g or so its not an issue to carry the Ion stuffed in a pocket and a waterproof shell in my pack.

HTH

The Pace 3x3 is eVent, and £99. Most folk who've got one are please with it.

I've almost given up on 'proper' waterproof jackets.

I wear softshell jackets in winter as they're fairly waterproof but very breathable. In summer/autumn I tend to wear very lightweight windproof stuff and accept I'll get wet in anythign but a light shower but will still be warm.

I am now back to paclite, although it gets wet on the inside due to sweat it has still drawn the moisture away from you, therefore wear a good wicking base layer and it will stay dry

I'm trying (unsuccessfully) to find a stockist of the Pace 3x3 eVent. Been through most of the links listed on Pace website.

Any suggestions please?

Definitely need to wear the right type of base layer, some are warmer than others.

Unless it's really chucking it down, I tend to wear a softshell - Gore Windstopper - although the seams aren't taped. Still does a pretty good job for a few hours.

Am very happy with my Gore Paclite in heavy rain but it's not durable and it's been repaired several times due to off's.

best 30 bucks Ive spent on a jacket.. i never go out on my bike without it.. ideal for late spring, all summer and autumn... it's meant to get you buy if you get caught out.. Ive worn it in down pours out on the trails for 2-3hrs and its never leaked.. admittedly its more to do with the coating on it, which will/does wash out fairly quickly if you don't take care of it.. but its very easy to re-proof.. used Granger's re-proofer, worked a treat.. which is what Ive just done, along with my more expensive winter jacket.. not sure if it'll handle a heavy crash though.. but Ive decked it a few times and it hasn't ripped yet.. ideal for the warmer months and its a good wind stopper too.. it rolls up into its wee bag which is just a bit bigger than a tennis ball.. so doesn't take up much room in the back pack...

Event fabric is very breathable, I've got a couple of Event jackets (Endura Venturi and Montane Superfly)definitely more breathable than other jackets I've had in Goretex XCR and Paclite.
If you're a size Large theres one in the classifieds
http://www.singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/fs-endura-event-venturi-jacket-size-l-in-black-1

Also have a Montane Featherlite, very good as a windshirt but definitely only showerproof, although they do also the Featherlite H2O, which is fully waterproof but much less breathable.

The Pace jacket can be mail ordered from Pace.

I love my Altura Attack jacket, but it's still sweaty, it's a winter jacket really despite being one of the more breathable options out there. For summer, a gilet is the better answer, you don't care much if your arms get wet.

I'd go for the altura attack if I was buying again, I have the previous version (same as the current top DHB jacket) but was annoyed they had removed the pitzips (from it's previous incarnation). Though NW's comment illustrate they're obviously only so effective. Can only see them for £99 on Merlin though, not the £80 mentioned above

I got mine from Pace when I picked my forks up, have you tried them direct?
The best jacket I've ever had for waterproofness/breathability is my Pace Interactive. In the middle of winter you can literally just wear a base layer underneath. Not a summer jacket though!
