mk1.

hands took a bit of a beating yesterday at cannock. i run kenda nevegals pumped up to about 30ish as i prefer rolling faster (and easier) rather than the drag of a squishy tyre. this is because i feel im not fit enough so its less effort with a harder tyre and ill take the discomfort over trailing behind 😳

after this ride, im now interested in seeing how i fare with fatter, squidgier tyres. with this in mind, what tyres would fit in the mk1 gryphons frame and forks, and how low would you recommend running them?
im running tubeless, but theyre not tubeless tyres, just normal 29 tyres with stans inside. apparently proper tubeless are heavier, and er.....id prefer lighter tyres cos im not fit enough and i dont want to be trailing behi..... oh you get the idea 😀

thanks

tick

I think I have the later Mk2 with greater clearances.

Am trying to sort out some enfattening. Hopefully sorting out a 3" for the front later this week (Alex. Im looking at you 🙂 ) and Ive built some i35 wheels to hang them off.

I picked up a s/h Ikon (2.2?) last week, but that seems to come up v narrow in the back - Ive got loads more room for something bigger. Not sure how far I can go though, and I dont think my wallet will cope with much more trial and error, so I shall follow thread w interest.

may be wrong but i think mk1 is cream, mk2 is green so should be easy enough to identify.

Although I'm on a green one I was running 2.35 Hans D and 2.25 Nobby which worked quite well. Now gone to 1.75 Landcruiser and 1.6 Smart Sam Plus cause I wanted more of a monstercross set up. It's great! Haven't had any noticeable reduction in comfort at 30psi. Haven't actually noticed that much comfort difference between the Chronicle I had on the front initially and the Landcruiser. Using gel pads under the bar tape though so that probably makes some difference?

just been out to the garage to take a couple of pics and realised theyre not both nevegals. ive got a 2.2 nevegal up front and a schwalbe little albert 2.1 on t'back. (apologies for poor light, need to sort me garage lights out). hopefully you can see how much clearance there is.

as for the wheels, theyre stans, but not sure which model. had a quick tape measure over them and they seem 1" wide which im not sure is condusive to any fatter tyres?

what do you reckon my best options are?

thanks

Doesn't look like you've got loads of room in the back. Can probably manage some more in the front though.

How much grip do you actually need? Are you riding a lot of tech or muddy natural stuff?
A few pretty obvious combos for keeping light and fast:
Race king 2.2/Xking 2.4
Ralph 2.25/Nic 2.35
Ardent Race 2.2/Forekaster 2.35

P.S. when tubeless and off road low pressure is actually faster then high pressure.

not riding much at all really, only just starting to get back into it after a couple of years off. all these new + tyre sizes have passed me by, im just reading up on them all. but..... i envisage doing stuff like sherwood or cannock, i wouldnt take a gryphon to the peaks for instance.

thanks. im assuming the bigger sizes are the fronts yep?

yeah i read that earlier, really surprised me. id have thought higher pressures would always mean better rolling (faster) than lower pressures.

just been looking at the prices of some of those tyres new, looks like prices have also risen sharply while ive been off the bike. ill mebbes put a wtd ad up for some cheaper second hand jobbies with decent wear left.

thanks a lot

On my Mk 1 I can get a 3" knard ( on a 30mm internal rim) in the front and a 2.3 ground control in the back ( on a 35mm internal rim)

thanks

@sadexpunk, great, if looking at trail centre reds then agressive end of XC tyre range will be just great.

Yes, wider and more knobby on the front for more cush and grip.

And yes, tyres are getting crazy expensive, can usually get down to £30-35 though by shopping around and waiting for discounts

so those examples up there ^^^ are still your recommendations for 'aggressive end of xc' yep?

thanks

All the fronts are within the realms of agressive XC, although the Nic is more of a trail tyre.

The race king and ralph are definitely not agressive, but mostly you want fast rolling on the rear - they are popular choices for XC and Endurance racers doing events on similar courses to what you describe.
