Were off to Madeira for a few days of uplifted biking with freeride Madeira at the end of sept.

Will a spesh butcher and slaughter (both grid) be ok, or is it potentially muddy and i should put something a bit grippier on the back?

Butcher and slaughter have always worked fine for me with in other 'exotic' locations like finale so presume they will be fine

Not been but when our daughter went she was on Butcher/Butcher with no problems. The new ones are due in the shops soon and are a bit beefier sidewalls than the Grid ones which allows her to run a bit less pressure.

I'd probably not run a slaughter. It can be slick in places, depending on where you go. You won't be climbing much, so there's no drawback to running a grippy rear tyre. Butcher/butcher grid is a good choice.

Been twice and used their hire bikes, last time was an Enduro with big/half fat tyres which were great everywhere except the black mud washed of the hills after the forest 🔥, no idea where the bike was going when I hit one of those mud puddles.....

First time around the tyres were “well used”as was the whole bike as in brakes went awol, broke some spokes and chain required repairing!!!!! Other than that we had a great time....

All depends on what trails you are going to ride, easy or serious.... I’d go with tyres you know and trust

Its a brilliant way to see the island btw. Where are you staying?

What we were told....

watch out for the grass - it can be slippy

oh and watch out for the gravel - it can be slippy

the rock is pretty slippy - sorry

dont try and brake on the gravel - it’s slippy

the rain up here makes the leaves slippy

when it’s muddy it can be slippy

its quite strange the dry soil - it can be slippy

they mostly ran Magic Mary DH tyres on their own and the hire bikes. We did ok with Shorty / Minion DHR2 exo

I’ll only say it’s slippy - no matter where you ride - so just don’t brake

Madeira is a lovely place. However our/my guide Pietro/Peter was telling us that the Russians have started to buy up property and holiday there!!!!

Cracking bike shop way up top of town (Funchal) selling mainly KTM cycles and motor bikes, took a bit of finding but was a good afternoons walk about town. They were just getting a whole load of stuff sorted out but we’re very friendly and chatted for ages....

Been there done that(or at least in my dreams!!!)but a lot, lot, lot slower. As above it was wet & windy with low cloud, certainly not dusty as per video. So if you are going up there shut your eyes and imagine you are in that auld Fiat

The bit at 2mins is well tricky when wet As is riding on the grass down to it!!!!!

Thanks all, I got the impression that the place had the potential to be slippery, I'll get something different to the slaughter for the rear.
