Just a quick question really - I am looking at some Schwalbe Eddy Current tyres for the Autumn/Winter and was wondering if having a 2.6 on the rear and a 2.4 on the front was a good idea? Or is it best to stick with 2.6 all round..?
I ride tracks that have loose surface generally and a few muddy stretches during the winter.
EDIT - I have a Ray/Ralph combo at the moment but they are a bit slippy in any wet stuff.
I have no input about the particular tyre as I've never used it, however the normal default on tyre sizes is either same size front and rear, or larger front and smaller rear rather than smaller font and larger rear.
I think this is down to wanting more grip on the front to avoid understeer etc.
Wot wobble said.
Got 2.6s at present. Love them.
Having wider on the back can feel pretty bloody weird in ruts or cutting through mud, front slices through, rear sort of squeezes in after. Not sure it'd be obvious with 2.4/2.6
Gotcha, wider front is better then. Thanks.
Clicked on 2.6 front and rear as can’t find a 2.4 rear so will see how they do. Fairly new tyre design by the looks of it.
In reality, measure them and see the difference, I bet it's not enough over the length of a bike to make a blind bit of difference.
Eddy Current is the other extreme to Ray/Ralph... from XC tyres to heavy casing EBike tyres?
Yeah, I doubt it makes much difference either. I’m not pushing the boundaries of performance by any stretch of the imagination either!!!
Eddy Current would suit an ebike but I’m not sure I’d want to pedal them for long - and I run pretty gnarly tyres all year round.
If it’s not for an Ebike I would steer clear
They weigh a hefty weight
Solid tyres and hard to fit
Plus the grip ain’t great in mud
So do you think they will be a bit heavy going then? I have an ebike but I do 30 mile rides on it. My other option was Nobby Nic and something else on the back but I can't find any stock of a 2.35 Nobby Nic. Maybe a 2.25 would be OK; I am inclined to think that wider is better but that may not be the case....
Not sure what's going on with the posts on this forum but I reply to what I think was the last post in the thread and then when I come back to the page later there is another post above mine that wasn't there before....??? It's happened twice in this thread now.
Anyhow - so how come the grip isn't much good in the mud @hainman? I thought the nobbly bits would give good grip in the mud...? What about wider tyres?
I'm after something for the winter to replace my Ray/Ralph combo which has been excellent in the drier months but as soon as there is a little bit of slop they squirm about. My rides are on disused railway tracks so loose dirt and dry ruts in the dry and some quite muddy/puddly sections in the wet.... I like Schwalbe tyres only because I am familiar with the range and looking at other brands just makes my head explode with all the choices of compounds/tread patterns etc.!!! Obviously stock is now a limiting factor too... I kind of thought a Nobby Nic front and Rock Razor rear would do me but I can't seem to find any stock of 2.35/2.25. I can get hold of a 2.6 Nobby Nic front and 2.35 Rock Razor rear - would this work or is the difference too much???
“ My rides are on disused railway tracks so loose dirt and dry ruts in the dry and some quite muddy/puddly sections in the wet…”
You will hate Eddy Currents - they’re designed for riding up and down very steep trails on an ebike. Tons of grip and even more drag.
You need a mixed conditions XC tyre.
It looks like the Rocket Ron is the wet/mud version of your current tyres.
Thanks - so Rocket Ron front and rear then? Or is something else on the rear a better solution...
Or will these be more suitable...? My head is pretty much done in by the choice at this point though!!!

For disused railway tracks, they're probably overkill. If you like Schwalbe, how about a set of Nobby Nics? More bite than your current combo, but not a full-n gnar tyre.
Ooops, I see you've already mentioned NNs, but they seem like an obvious sort of choice if you can find some in the size you like.
Thanks, I couldn’t find any NNs earlier but I can now find one… do you reckon I can pair it with a Rock Razor and get suitable performance?
Rock Razor is a semi-slick, for shredding in drier conditions with something like a Magic Mary up front.
Right so a pair of Nobby Nics is what I need or the Rocket Rons as previously mentioned then. That narrows it down somewhat. Stock is the thing I guess. Out of interest is there much difference using a wider version? Eg a 2.6 as opposed to a 2.25..
Wider tyres need slightly wider rims and slightly lower pressures to work their best. I’m happiest around the 2.4” region, maybe narrower on back but not by much.
That’s great, thanks very much for the helpful advice (as usual on here). I’ve got 30mm rims so I’ll try and source something Nobby Nic, Rocket Ron in a 2.35 - 2.5 sort of thing.
The Eddy Currents I ordered arrived yesterday, obviously they’ve got to go back after the advice here but they look really cool in the box, shame they’re not suitable. I don’t want to have tyres that are sluggish though so I’ll need to start gnarly steep trail riding to earn them if I want to justify keeping them!!!🤣 Not really likely I’m afraid, maybe next year eh!!!🙄
