Ok so the 5 29 is near enough sold so Im on the look out for something to replace it with.

Bits I liked about the 5....

Geometry
29" wheels
Ability to plough through stuff if I get it wrong.

Bits i didnt like....

Weight
flexyish rear end.

To that end Im looking for another 29er full susser thats a bit stiffer and lighter new or secondhand for £1800?

Where do I start.

Cheers

Steve

I like the look of those Pyga 110 jobbies, no idea what weight they are though.

Is a bit of weight loss (you won't manage a lot off at £1800) and a slightly stifer rear end worth changing a bike for if you like the rest of it?

There'll always be compromises.

Try and get a test ride on the 2016 stumpjumper fsr. Shorter back end and slacker front than the 2015 and earlier models. Could be had new for around your budget.

Weren't you only selling it because you never got chance to ride it and you were going to be working away again?

Did you really notice the flex? Sure it wasn't the wheels?
Your for sale thread suggests that you haven't ridden since August...I'm not sure spending more money will actually help. A lot of money if it won't be used much.

Genuine question but do you need such a big bike? What about a hardtail?

<can't help myself>

Is the frame itself not a pretty good weight? Oranges tend not to be heavy but it's hard to get frame weights... You'll have no trouble finding a stiffer rear end tbf.

Remedy or carbon/half carbon Trailfox? I suspect both have lighter frames but, they definitely have a lighter feel. Neither's that common as a frame though... But then Evans have a complete TF02 for £2650, 6.5lb halfcarbon frame and covered in good stuff. I think they're mostly overlooked because the RRP is absurd but they're good bikes.

flexyish rear end

Have you been listening to Northwind? 😉

It'd the wheels that make it feel flexy, carbon wheels make it absolutely fine.

tbh Though there are a couple of guys who ride 5 29's in the 'valley' and I've not heard of them complaining of flex - and they ride far far harder than you will be doing, so maybe you ought to just look at a carbon rear wheel?

Better wheels will make pretty much any bike feel better.

But as for a new bike, if you want it stiffer and lighter than the 5 29 and still a 29er you'll need to be looking at something in carbon.

My meta am 29 is stiff as anything but probably doesn't fill the lighter box. Tallboy Lt (c)? Getting expensive though. You are the odd intense carbine around on a bit of a deal, one of those?

Friend had the BMC, seemed very good.

Thanks for the replies chaps.

Just to be clear Im not buying yet but doing a bit of research for the moment.
Ive seen the root miller and it looks a good bike for the money but I dont actually know anyone who has one?

Enduro 29er is an option too.

Not sure about a pyga, never heard of them to be honest?

I am away at the moment and back late march but going away again for another four months in may so will be looking to buy in september/october so would it be possible to get a deal on an outgoing model year bike?

I like the 5 I really do but I will be honest with myself and say Im not fit enough or even a good enough rider to get the best out of it!

What an odd thing to say! Unless you get an E-Bike your next bike will still need pedalling!

Northwind has a point.

I can't believe a 5 has a flexible rear. It will be your wheels. Tighten them up? Or failing that, carbon rims will make much stiffer wheels.

Probably cheaper than selling and buying a new bike anyway

Yep, that is exactly the same frame as the Thumper. I'm riding it in Thumper guise and it's the stiffest bike I've ridden. They're not light, but they're built for damage and at that price, an absolute bargain. Running mine with 150mm Pikes, a slack angle bushing and headset, bringing in line with the latest geometry trends.

So your not actually buying for another 9 months, having not ridden the 5 for 6 months. So are you looking to buy then or now?

im sure there will be a new wheel size or some cr@p we all need by then

There are a lot of people suggesting wheels, for ~ £200 maybe worth a shot at those first? Plus if its still not right you can add them onto whatever replaces it.

If you just want a change though, no one can blame you lifes too short 😀

I demo'd a nice man from here's codeine, that was a beast, maybe demo one?

+1 for spesh enduro 29.

I've ridden both and they are very different in terms of ride characteristic.

E29 shouldn't be as nimble and fun when you look at the figures. Spesh has done a great job.

I thought the orange was a hoot in a straight line, corners, not so much.

While it may be single pivot, it has hundreds* of bushes and bearings. I want a 'pure', same as an Orange Segment/5/Patriot/224 one pivot and four shock bushings. That is it. No more. [s]No less.[/s]

Cannondale are the closest I think.

Secondhand Transition Smuggler will probably be in budget by September.

Possibly not that much lighter but the shorter rear end and shorter travel will make it feel peppier than the Five 29 I reckon. It feels peppier than a lot of 26ers I've ridden.

Smuggler is a good choice if you want stiffness. Coming from a 26" Five (and having had a few demo rides on the Segment) the stiffness of the rear end on the Smuggler is the defining difference for me. But you probably wont save too much weight. So, if you think that matters, you'll probably need to pony up for a carbon frame.

It was a very good bike, but slightly behind-the-times geometry wise now. I put a -1deg headset in from the start.

Positives - good balance of weight & stiffness and 130mm travel makes it very versatile. Suspension works well, frame and parts durable.

Negatives - I now prefer a longer bike, with a lower BB. It was great with a 650b rear wheel to lower the BB - but still a bit too short in the TT. It was a bit flexy when riding it hard but probably on par with similar trail bikes.

I'm afraid this is life in the forces. I don't chose to be sent away for 8 months of the year. But thanks for the handy tip.

I like the look of the Enduro 29er but they seem quite rare?

Another one I was looking at when I bought the 5 29 was a carbon stumpjumper 29er.

Just thought I would post up my feelings on the bike now I've had it for a few months and finally got some decent rides in that I'd done previously on my Trance and 5 spot so I could give a proper comparison.

First off... I LOVE IT

Just had to get that out of the way.

So, today Ive been to glenlivet on the 5. It was my third trip there and each time on different bikes. The last time I went was on the Trance and it was that trip that sealed the fate of it as I had a horrendous time with it and came back knowing I needed a new bike.

Ok today then was a completely different outcome, come back even more impressed by the 5 and finally have found a bike that I want to keep.

A lot of people say that the 5 is a flexy beast and the 29 version is the worst of them all. On one section of trail there is a bit of a compression whilst going round a bend, on the trance I could properly feel the back end get out of shape and flex. Today however I couldn't feel any flex at all despite hitting the same section faster and harder.

The fit of the bike is almost perfect for me too. I haven't had to mess around with it much trying different stems etc. It just fits nice.

The 5 read like the perfect bike for him after all that nonsense with the Trance,he could just store it till he needs it.

Looking at what fasthaggis wrote has helped me reflect a little bit.

Its true I did feel that at the time but looking back Id just come off the Trance which for me was the worst bike Id ever owned and the Orange felt like a nice bike at the time.

Maybe I said the above wearing rose tinted specs ??

I dont want to be a serial bike swapper !!

If only the 5 was about 6 lbs lighter and a bit stiffer

If I rode as little as you say you do, I'd have a hardtail. I don't think it's a great idea getting bearings/linkages soaked, then not riding them for 8 months.

Think you're going to struggle to get something lighter and stiffer at that price. Maybe try and get a bit fitter so a burly bike doesn't feel such a chore to pedal.

As above from Nobeer, I'd get a HT.

There are some awesome nu-skool geometry ones about at the moment....Stanton, the new Ragleys, PP Shan etc....spend the money on the best fork you can buy, fit awesome brakes and then don't worry so much about how little you sometimes get to ride. My Ragley handled Antur brilliantly, no doubt I'm faster on my Trance but I don't ride FS much so i tend to keep it for dry days, the HT is a brilliant workhorse in between.

Didn't someone in this country win a regional level DH or Enduro race on a HT recently?....buy wisely and the rear end of a HT these days can be as stiff or flexy as you desire.

I'd go PP Shan frame, Fox-36 forks, XT drivetrain and brakes, custom wheel build using something proven like Flow-EX rims etc, then just invert the forks for the sake of keeping the oil near the seals when you get a posting and go away for months....come home, fit forks and rip the trails again on a bike that will likely need bugger all maintenance.

You're not going to save 6lbs out of any frame so if you want 6lbs lighter, you need different kit not frame... But there's a limit to how light you can be, with a LT 29er, and have it still function.

Literally.

Figures say it's 1cm longer top tube and 2mm shorter reach than 5 29. So it should be fine as a commuter/second bike.

not wishing to sound harsh, but if you were able to get fitter and lose a few stone you would achieve a bit/rider setup which achieved this ! 🙂

I never got on with my Five, the Patriot was abit better but then I jumped on a borrowed Blur LT and it felt like night and day around. The Meta V4 felt solid as a house compared to the lot.

No offence to Five fans but I think Orange need to focus/diversify on other suspension systems otherwise they'll shrink and ultimately disappear or be bought out.

That's a personal opinion but I can't see new aspiration customers replacing the diehard Orange fans for continual sales.

So what's so much better about the suspension on your single-pivot Meta V4 than a single-pivot Orange?

From what I understand Orange sell as many 5's as they have the capacity to make so don't think they will worry anytime soon. Every time they do a different design it gets binned after a few years as every one still buys the 5 or Alpine 160. Oh, and they were bought out last year.

I have a 5 29 Renton. I changed the original Mavic/Formula tubed wheels for a posher Mavic UST/Hope tubless set up and it's made the bike far more lively as the wheels are much lighter. I also swapped the Deore cassette for a lighter XT one.

If you simply want a new bike then get one but it might be worth upgrading a few parts on the Orange first.

Renton: You need to get yourself a Liteville 301: 160mm travel, sub 30lbs, really zippy when pedalling even with the shock open but great on aggressive descents.
