Have searched and found a few old threads but with the more modern trend towards tubeless, what do people do with old tyres?

I seem to have accumulated about 12 of the things, most 26” and still in fair condition tread wise, just knackered through sticky sealant inside them.

Without sealant I could give them away but it would be so much faff to remove it, nobody would bother.

Soooo, what to do with them? Anybody know of a recycling centre that handles such things?

Bit of an assumption, better asking your local cycle co-op or fling a post on the classifieds tbh.

You would be surprised at what people will do if they get something for free

I'm happy to spend 2-3 hours cleaning something up if I got it for free or very cheaply, I've cleaned tyres out that had years of dried sealant in them

Lots of people are after older parts to keep bikes running cheaply, good branded 26in wheels, tyres etc... are worth money

Chuck them on Facebook/Gumtree etc.. with pics and as a job lot, they will sell

your local cycle co-op

+1

They'll be able to freshen up the 26in bikes that they are selling cheap to those who can't afford a new bike.

One of our local bike shops takes them for recycling but you have to pay something like £2 a type and 50p a tube...

As above, give them away free on FB, Gumtree or Freecycle. Have you got a local FB group in your neighbourhood? It’s basically the modern version of leaving on the pavement with a ‘free, help yourself’ sign.

Brand new Maxxis square knob BMX type things

and maybe a few others.

Slight tangent, why do people bother cleaning the sealant out? It's not as though it negatively effects the function of the tyre or weighs much, may as well spritz the things with a little eau de toilette too., or am I missing something?

Ask if you can donate to your local kids' cycling club. There will likely be a few kids on 26ers.

If the tyre can't be run tubeless for other reasons (perhaps an irreparable hole that won't seal) then old sealant + tubes is a bad combo. I had a tyre which I couldn't repair/couldn't be bothered trying to repair so I just stuck a tube in, but the old sealant sort of glued to the tube to the inside of the tyre which made it far more susceptible to pinch punctures (although a combo of old tyre + old tube + good old fashioned frustration meant I got to pretend I was a professional and just ride it flat for the duration of the climb I was trying to KOM. Surprisingly satisfying 😎)

I guess you could maybe just liberally dust with talc or something but not sure if that would work.

That's probably not the fault of the old sealant sticking the tube to the tyre, there's a reason why we used to think 35psi was about as low as you'd like to go for a mtb rear tyre.

both my kids are on 26" wheeled bikes, as is my wifes bike, so often looking for suitable tyres. I am sure i am not alone in this. Post on your local FB page or donate to the local bike charity.

friends or ebay or local bike cooperative.

sold 2x 700/32 gravel tyres the other week, at least 50% worn, got £7 for them plus £3.45 postage (upto 2kg royal mail second small packet) as others say, its amazing what people buy

@twonks I'm interested in the magic mary and trail kings - would you post them if I cover costs?

Cheers guys, seems to be somewhat more interest and options than I imagined !

I've had a few messages asking over individual tyres, which is exactly what I didn't want as I really CBA finding boxes and sending them out in 4 or 5 parcels.

I'll put a one time job lot offer in the classifieds later and if no bites, will find a local co-op bike thing nearby and donate them - didn't know such shops existed tbh.

@twonks I'd be interested in them as a job lot, use them quite a lot on various bikes. Will have to keep an eye out for your listing

@twonks Just commented on it but haven't used the new classifieds before so not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if I need to do something else lol

Probably not a serious solution for the OP, but whenever there's a 'what to do with old tyres' thread, I find myself drawn back to this chap - http://jiyongho.com/?msclkid=dafdf553c19911ec83acdcac6450e0aa&ckattempt=1 (there seem to be quite a lot of artists doing it).
