You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
I have too many bikes, even if I sell this one I'll have too many bikes so it's not really about making room, but help me out making a decision here...
I have a 1998 Klein Pulse set up as a single speed, a silly silly light single speed I might add (~17 lbs without pedals)
Since its's a 1998 Klein, and a Pulse it's not worth the silly money of older ones, despite being just as light, 99% as good ride wise, and having the added benefit of taking normal BB's and headsets, it's also 26inch and rim braked so it's probably worth buttons to sell complete...
It's also absolutely flippin' batcrap crazy fast and good fun to ride when the weather is good, problem is I only ride it a few times a year and it's mostly just sitting there, but does always put a smile on my face when I ride it.
What to do then, it's not worth much, and the space it takes up isn't critical to reclaim:
> split and sell
> sell complete
> keep and get a smile occasionally
Keep and ride occasionally.
Then if/when the frame breaks, mount it tastefully in the living room.
List on Retrobike complete, when it doesn't sell list it as parts, when they don't sell donate it to a local bike related charity
Reading between the lines, you want to keep it.
what size is it?
List on Retrobike complete, when it doesn't sell
It'd go if cheap enough, my dilemma is whether it's worth it or keep for occasional smiles.
list it as parts, when they don't sell
The parts would sell easily enough
donate it to a local bike related charity
erm... I help run the local one
You like it, you enjoy riding it. Selling it will bring you regret when you fancy a blast on a balmy summers evening.
Unless you need the space or the money keep it.
But then you knew that already.
Why is it obsolete?
Why is it obsolete?
well the comment was a bit tongue-in-cheek but at it's heart it's true, I have more modern, more capable bikes that are superior in almost every way. A rigid single speed with rim brakes and 26inch wheels is obsolete, that doesn't mean it's not fun or lacks value though.
Reading between the lines, you want to keep it.
But then you knew that already.
kinda, but that's why I'm trying to solicit opinions to help me decide if that's the right thing to do
Just ride it more. You've established you won't get much cash for it, forget its a Klein, forget it used to be worth a bit, put on a pair of flat pedals and use it as a pub/shop bike. It'll make those errands more fun
forget its a Klein, forget it used to be worth a bit
it's not about what it was worth at all, it's now worth very little, I've had my use out of it so it's really not about £, although I guess in a way it is, but in reverse, thats the crux of it, it's worth so little should I bother selling, or just keep it...
use it as a pub/shop bike, It'll make those errands more fun
it won't, I have far more practical bikes for that kind of thing, and to make it useful as a shop bike it'd need the racks and panniers which are on those practical bikes and make them less fun to ride, so that's not really gonna work, it's fun because of it's current set up as a very light SS MTB, to make it useful as a shop bike (assuming I didn't already have one) would probably suck all the fun out of it.
Just ride it more
That's actually good advice 🙂
I've sold a number of bikes over the years because I needed the money and I've regretted it on more than one occasion. If you don't need the cash then keep it.
I have far more practical bikes for that kind of thing
Oh dear me, whats practicality got to do with it, I'm talking about fun!! 😆
Think how much fun you'll have sprinting about on it, taking silly routes back etc.
You have a soft spot for the bike, keep it. 🙂
Photo? what size?
If you need the money or the space then sell it
Otherwise keep it and enjoy it as it sounds like it brings a lot of joy when you bother to ride her.
Talk about it on lots of forums, mentioning how light it is, how it's 99% as good as the really retro one, all it's other benefits, like proper bb shells and headtubes, and how bat crap fast it is, but really cheap.
That way you'll generate interest from people wanting to buy it and maybe get an offer for it you can't refuse.
It's also absolutely flippin' batcrap crazy fast and good fun to ride when the weather is good
And.....it puts a smile on your face when you ride it
You should sell a different bike if you have to let one go. One that doesn't make you smile as much.
Sorry to disappoint you tomhoward this isn't a stealth ad (hence me not replying to the queries about pics and size), and the masses have persuaded me I'm probably better off keeping it
Still post a pic tho. I like kleins. 🙂
If it is good fun to ride why only ride a) when the weather is good and b)only a few times a year.
A main advantage to single speeds is they are good when the weather is bad. Guessing you have too many bikes to choose from though..

Maybe it already has some skinwalls 😉
for god's sake man what size is it and where are the pictures
honestly, you can't get the posters these days
I think I've seen that bike when I came round to pick up a very kindly donated crankset (still going strong btw)
I dunno what you should do with it though 🙂
Oh, I thought you said it was light. Disappointed.
Shermer, that image is sublime! Thank you!
Spooky - I've just picked up my new bike and I need get rid of a 1996 singlespeed Klein. Rigid, rim brakes etc. Wonderful to ride but my joints need a bit more comfort nowadays.
I am planning to list it for what it owes me and then break it up for bits if it doesn't sell. It would be a shame as I love it but I can't see it getting ridden. Mine is a bit of a heavy weight compared to yours though at just just under 20lbs.
With us, it is space that is a problem rather than freeing up a little cash and I really can't stand having things like this sat around gathering dust.
If you don't need to sell it, keep it. Obvious really.
Where are you OP I need a commuter
Give it to me, then it's my problem 😀
Turn it into an ebike 😛

List on Retrobike complete...
Or join Retrobike and take it on rides with like minded people...
That will justify its existence. 🙂
I used to be a regular on the SW retrobike rides and helped organise a few but it seems to have died a death down here recently, still ride with a few of the same people who I met through RB but just not as RB rides, shame really they were great fun. Might see if I can breathe some life back into them over the summer 🙂
That will justify its existence.
Pfffft! Like a bike needs justification 😉
Grumpster - what size and roughly how much?

I thought you were a married man. 🙂
I am, but lucky for me MrsA also rides, and she gets even more attached to her bikes than me 😉
