I'm going to have most of Saturday to myself as the other half has a work(ish) thing on all day, in Wigton, we're staying not far away (not sure exactly where).

I probably won't be taking my bike, so what/where to hire/ride/do any other solo activities for best part of the day, on my own?

Keswick or Whinlatter both do hire bikes and easy enough to get to, depends what kind of riding you're after

Go to any of the local pubs and have a few beers while watching the football. You'll definitely be able to get into a fight.

If you did take your bike, you've got the Calbeck Fells nearby for open grassy old-skool stuff, or Ullock Pike for more mentalist stuff.

why aren't you taking your bike? seems a no brainer since the weather will be lovely this week and you'll be all by yourself. Go on *pokes op* take your bike.

I will have the use of the car for the day so can travel a bit.

Don't mind trail centre or natural stuff, but needs to be relatively easy to navigate and not an all-day epic.....

Your first priority should be to leave wigton. Perhaps you could go to Maryport or'Pate' to make the prospect of returning to Wigton seem less alarming.

It's not so bad really I'm culturally obliged to slag it off being from south Cumbria but there really is naff all there. Whinlatter to hire a bike or get up the fells on foot or on bike. Left field suggestion, a day sea fishing from maryport/whitehaven?

The locals will come over and sniff her suspiciously, as they won't immediately recognise the genes, but they're harmless. Its just curiosity.

There are some good rides to be had anywhere down that west side down to Eskdale. If you've got all day, you could do Skiddaw, or something. Just take a bike and get a map out. Their are a couple of bike hire places in Keswick if you don't take a bike.

Don't go to Cumbria and just ride a trail centre, please!

I thought I ought to update this for anyone who's interested!

I persuaded the girlfriend to let me put the soul in the back of her beloved A3, this involved one seat down, both wheels and seatpost out and in bin bags, frame in large TNT bag, all went in a treat.

Dropped her off at Wigton market 9am Saturday, took myself down to Keswick, had a nice chat with the guy at Keswick Bikes, bought a very expensive water bottle........

Got a waterproof borrowdale bash map from the nice ladies at the tourist info. centre in the square, got some Jaffa cakes from the co-op and away to go.

Didn't mind the road ride out along the lake side, quite a pull up to Ashness bridge, but broken up by a brief stop there and at Surprise View, then down to Watendlath, via a bit of cheeky footpath on the right of the road, though I got back up on the road after the gate via the steps.

Watendlath, what a place, loved it, then up the bridleway, lots of pushing, over the top to Rosthwaite, nearly had 2 over the bars, but somehow saved them and got to the bottom unscathed.

Passed by a group whilst taking photo's of sheep before Seatoller, caught them on Honister Pass, then dropped back and had a nice little push up for last third. Then sort of rode with them/slightly behind them (thanks for waiting for me with the gates if you're on here!) across to Castle Cragg, then on down the rocky section, which I sadistically enjoyed on the soul, even if it wasn't fast.

After Manesty cottages I missed a turn up into the woods so carried on the road until the little quarry then picked the route back up, nice fast section over there down to the hairpins. Blasted the last section up the road to/through Portinscale, across the footpath and back to Keswick, nearly 20 miles, about 3.5 hours with numerous stops.

Well chuffed, thanks for the advice, so glad I didn't just go to Whinlatter, though a combo would be good next time, and there will be a next time, I loved the lakes, the type of riding really suited me, already planning the next trip.

Anyway, finished the day off by watching the Ewe Lambs sold in Wigton, other half had to present cups as she was judging. Then up to Maryport/along coast, got some fish & chips, then stayed at The Greenhills Hotel Sat night. Bimbled home via Keswick, Watendlath (again, I liked it that much), Ambleside & Windermere.

2 things about Cumbria though - the roads up near Carlisle, so straight, no signs, hidden dips and bends, slightly scary in the dark!

Wheyrigg Hall Hotel - wow, welcome to 1975, that's all I'm saying.

Photos to come.
