[Closed] What to do about my forks?

Morning all,

I wanted to pick the collectives brain about my current form conundrum.

Currently I have an 06 Float 130 R on my Altitude as my 08 Float 140 RL is unwell. After changing the seals & oil the lockout & rebound both stopped working and despite advice from all corners are refusing to play the game. I'm going to send them off for a service and thought while I'm at it will get some new 15mm lowers & swap the current ones onto the older forks as they are in better condition.

Now all in I'm guesstimating around £260 for this to be done which lead me to wonder would I be better off just buying a new (to me) fork instead? I could then get the floats sorted later or sell them as a going concern to help fund new forks. If I did that then I would benefit from better internals and more travel as a pose to upgrading an older platform.

Thoughts on this much appreciated as I'm going getting nowhere fast.

Cheers all :)[u]

You say you might want more travel that 140mm? If so then get these, only £270.

Im not after more then 140 as I don't want to mess with the geometry.

Currently I'm using a 130 as the 140 is up the spout so by either getting it repaired/upgraded or getting another fork I'll get more travel ie back to 140mm. The question is which would I be better off doing; repair or replace?

I had looked at Rev's however I'm not sure if they are as smooth as the floats, they would need the travel reduced & aren't in stock.

They will be smooth enough if not smoother.

Didn't notice about them being out of stock. 😳

I would still need to get them spaced down to 140 which would mean additional expence.

If you're swapping lowers, won't you need to get the bushes resized to match the uppers?

If your old fork was in working order, it probably makes economic sense to sell your old fork and buy a new one.

But as you're having trouble fixing it your self, chances are you'll have to pay some else to fix it. So im not sure its worth it.

I'd prob just take the hit and get it fixed, use this opportunity to possibly upgrade the damper or get it pushed or tuned to your needs?

And for what its worth a few years back I swapped some Fox Vanilla RL, regarded at the time as one of the smoothest forks for some Rockshox Revelations and noticed very little different in small bump compliance and no difference in smoothness. If fact I much preferred the extra adjust-ability the Revs offered and could set the fork up exactly to my needs.

I dont think I'll have to make any changes to the lowers if I swap them from the 140 to 130 Floats. There both 32mm models on which the travel can be changed via spacers so it should just be a straight swap.

When you get a fork pushed what exactly does that do, is it just an upgrade to the rebound dampner?

Yes the lowers can we straight swapped, but if the bushings have less / more wear than the previous lowers, then they may be too tight / loose and damage things further.
It may be fine, but worth bearing in mind....

Had pretty much the same thing on the wife's bike. her 2006 float rl was creaking and the tangs on the rebound metering rod were broken (yours might have the same issue). to get them back up to spec was going to be about £170 so we just bought the forks linked above. also gave us the chance to upgrade to 15mm bolt thru.

They come with some spacers in the box IME.

If faced with a £260 bill I'd be getting new forks and sticking the old ones on ebay with an honest description. Someoen will have FUBAR'd stanchions or have roudned a bolt in the lowers and want them as spares, possibly for a suprising ammout of money!

I recently bought a bike with RS Revs. Really can't tell the difference between them and previous Fox Floats or Talas. I have been a Fox snob in the past, but this latest experience just confirms I've spent too much money in the past for no discernible difference.

Every day's a school day.

Stayhigh I fitted 150 revs to my altitude and it is miles better. Get the revs, you won't look back.

Thanks for all the responses all, I'm certainly coming round to the thinking that I maybe better off getting new or newer second hand ones.

Philfive: tell me more about your altitude, do you notice any negative change to the handling, does it affect the climbing at all?

Stayhigh,

I have a fully working 2007 130 / 140mm Terralogic cartridge (Open Bath) you can have for £45 posted. The only thing you need is new floodgate knob (I had to use it for another fork), I can get pics tomorrow if your interested. It'll fit as long as your fork is not OEM i.e. original Fox part and was not specific to a Spesh or Trek etc.
